Summary

The Hyser Lab at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a Research  Technician III. This laboratory performs basic and clinical research related to gastrointestinal (GI) virus replication, cell-host interactions and pathogenesis. A new project is continuing to examine how host signaling pathways are reprogrammed by viruses ad viral ion channels using live imaging of calcium signaling in infected cells and organoid cultures. These studies enable us to dissect host-virus interactions and potentially identify new targets for drug development. This Research Technician will be heavily involved in the studies that pertain to two GI viruses, human rotavirus and norovirus, but will also support postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in their focused molecular biology experimental research projects. The Research Technician will also be central for running and organization of the lab and perform a variety of experimental techniques under general supervision. 


Job Duties
  • Propagating viral and bacterial strains.
  • Performing mammalian cell culture.
  • PCR/RT-PCR assays for cell, virus, & mouse genotyping.
  • qRT-PCR for gene expression.
  • Assist with mouse husbandry.
  • Maintain lab supplies and inventory (ordering, stocking, preparing solutions/media).
  • Maintain detailed laboratory notebook and updating reagent catalogs for the lab.
  • Maintain general lab environment, including, but not limited to, equipment maintenance and repairs, organization, and cleanliness of the lab.
  • Participate in lab meetings and reads applicable literature.
  • Prepare figures and assists in writing related to experiments performed.
  • Maintain and ensure compliance with biosafety and laboratory regulations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a Basic Science or in a related field with 1-2 years of research experience
  • Experience in molecular biology, excellent aseptic technique and general skills common to a microbiology lab are a must. A strong preference will be given for experience in virology research and PCR.
  • Excellent documentation and organizational skills with the ability to keep accurate records of all work performed.
  • Strong analytical and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new techniques with instruction.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic, including ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, use good judgment and complete duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a team with diverse backgrounds.
