The Post Doctoral Researcher will study effectiveness of DNA or protein vaccine against tick-borne bacteria. The incumbent will clone several vaccine candidates, immunize mice, dogs or other animal models and challenge with Ehrlichia-infected ticks prepared  in the laboratory, and investigate effectiveness of vaccines in preventing tick transmission of Ehrlichia and clinical disease, and immune response parameters. The incumbent will investigate molecular, cellular, and immunological mechanisms that facilitate transmission of obligatory intracellular bacteria between mammals and ticks by using knockout mutant bacteria, ticks, mouse, and dogs as animal models in collaboration with other lab members.  

Requirement Functions

Clone and purify various molecules, ability to culture bacteria in mammalian and tick cells, use advanced microscopy, immunological assays including flow cytometry, handling ticks, mice, and dogs including blood and tissue sample collection, genotype analysis, various sterile techniques, advanced statistical analysis. 

Required Education

PhD in cell biology, virology, immunology, bacteriology, molecular biology, or a related discipline. 


Desired Education

Experience working with obligatory intracellular bacteria; previous first-author publication; experiences in handling ticks, mice, and dogs are preferred. 

Physical Requirements

This position may have exposure to animal dander and/or zoonotic diseases; exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or bio hazardous waste
