EPA Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Public Health Environmental Assessment (CPHEA), Public Health and Environmental Systems Division (PHESD), Environmental Pathways Modeling Branch located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, or in the Region 9 offices in San Francisco, California. Research Project: The research participant will have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of EPA scientists and will learn about geospatial data resources needed by decision-makers in the US Pacific Islands territories. The research participant's appointment may include interacting with stakeholders and researching, collecting, and processing geospatial data resources from existing sources of data. Of particular focus will be geospatial resources related to climate change, environmental health, and environmental justice. The research may include identification, development, modeling, documentation, and synthesis of spatial datasets, stakeholder engagement to understand needs and may include the development of use cases to be published in EnviroAtlas and/or EJScreen. The data resulting from this research will be made available through EnviroAtlas and this project will provide an opportunity to interact with the EPA's EnviroAtlas Team and learn about the application of social and ecological spatial data in EnviroAtlas. This project seeks to enhance geospatial data equity for the US Pacific Islands. The research participant will have the opportunity to learn through interactions with individuals and teams collaborating on cross-cutting human/environment projects at EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD), Public Health and Environmental Systems Division, Region 9, and other EPA divisions and programs as relevant. With guidance from the co-mentors, the research participant will have latitude in exercising independent initiative and judgment in the research commensurate with the level of training. The research participant will have the opportunity to engage with EPA ORD researchers, Region 9 staff, states, territories and local stakeholders to improve EPA's abilities to generate and translate decision-relevant, spatial social and ecological data to end-users. The research participant will be able to attend research team meetings and may be involved in all aspects of the research. This will include active engagement with stakeholders regarding applications of the research. There will be opportunities to develop, present, and publish research. The research participant will learn about EPA tools like EnviroAtlas and EJScreen. Learning Objectives: With guidance from their mentor and co-mentor, the research participant will have the opportunity to learn about developing, managing, and analyzing spatial datasets; analyzing and reporting on social and environmental conditions; engaging with US Pacific Island stakeholders, and collaborating on scientific writing and presentations in plain language. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed upon EPA recommendation and subject to availability of funding. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time. Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. A travel/training allowance will be provided to the candidate to present project-related research data and results at scientific meetings (e.g., conferences and workshops). EPA Security Clearance: Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at EPA. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. ORISE offers all ORISE EPA graduate students and Postdocs a free 5 year membership to the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA). - Qualifications
- The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Marine Science, Climate Science, Environmental Science, Physical or Human Geography, Computer Science, Earth and Geosciences), or be currently pursuing a master's degree with completion by the appointment start date. The degree must have been received within the past five years of the anticipated appointment start date. Preferred skills: Quantitative data management and analysis, including Geographic Information System (GIS) data management, analysis and mapping; statistical analysis and scripting (e.g., R, Python, Javascript). Knowledge and experience in working with spatial ecological and social science data. Attention to detail for organization and record keeping. Prior experience or desire to engage with multi-stakeholder groups. Understanding of Pacific Islands culture and geography. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
