The Baccarelli Lab at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health invites highly motivated candidates to apply for Postdoctoral Scientist positions.  We are seeking a wet lab scientist to lead method development and their applications in environmental health studies.  Funding is guaranteed for 2 years. The laboratory conducts large scale human studies to investigate the molecular mechanisms linking harmful environmental exposures to human disease. In collaboration with cohorts nationally and globally, the lab uses transdisciplinary methods, combining basic biological and qualitative science with advanced approaches in computational genomics, to identify novel disease mechanisms.

  • Develop novel epigenetics methods for human environmental health studies (25%)
  • Design, organize, and lead projects utilizing next generation sequencing methods to uncover genetic and epigenetic variations linked to environmental exposures (20%)
  • Collect and analyze research data; create detailed documentation of experiments and research data (20%)
  • Present results and discovery at conferences and for manuscript preparation (10%)
  • Assist in preparation of grant applications (10%)
  • Supervising and guidance to staff, technicians, students and researchers (5%)
  • Work with Assistant lab Director to develop new and ongoing projects with collaborators (5%)
  • Other responsibilities as needed (5%)

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Environmental Health, Genetics, Molecular Biology or other relevant disciplines with relevant previous work and interest in environmental epidemiology and/or molecular epidemiology

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize and prioritize within a changing environment
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to troubleshoot protocols
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and ability to supervise staff members
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills and work as team player
  • Demonstrate initiative and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in environmental health, environmental epidemiology, or related area
  • Expertise in DNA methylation, non-coding RNAs, or other similar biological mechanisms
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing, whole genome sequencing (WGS), RNA-seq and microarray
  • Understanding of population science/epidemiology approaches
  • Experience designing sequencing projects
  • Experience in conducting experiments using different biological matrices including DNA/RNA isolation and purification
