| Position Summary | The UNC Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies mission is to conduct, coordinate and promote basic and clinical research on the causes, prevention and treatment of alcoholism and alcoholic disease. The Center for Alcohol Studies (CAS) is one of fourteen National Research Centers funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAM). Founded in 1970, John A. Ewing, M.D., who served as its first director, and Senator Hargrove Skipper Bowles, through their vision and commitment, along with that of Representative Sam Johnson, led the Bowles Center and the state of North Carolina to the forefront of research into the causes of alcoholism, the search for its prevention, better treatment, and cure. Skipper Bowles realized the importance of alcoholism research and believed that this disease had its roots in the complex workings of the human brain and genetics. Time, research, and financial support have shown that Bowles was right. Since 1994, under the direction of Fulton T. Crews, Ph.D., the Center is now internationally recognized as a leader in the field of alcoholism and addiction medicine. The Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies and its clinical partner, UNC Health Care’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program, unite researchers, physicians, and therapists from diverse fields into a focused, multidisciplinary team. The Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies and The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program have four immediate goals: * To identify the genes that increase the risk of alcohol- related problems and explores gene therapy . * To make breakthrough discoveries on the basic mechanisms of addiction and translate the findings into improved treatment and prevention. * To establish professorships dedicated to research on addiction, alcoholic liver disease, and fetal alcohol syndrome . * To expand the treatment program into neighboring communities . Currently, the Bowles Center has 16 faculty members from eight different departments involved in research, teaching and service. In addition, six research assistant professors, along with postdoctoral fellows, research associates and graduate students create a highly interactive research community and exciting environment for basic and clinical discovery related to the brain disease of alcoholism. Research in the Center is extremely strong in the areas of drinking and relapse behavior, molecular adaptations to alcohol that underlie tolerance, dependence and protracted withdrawal, alcohol cell signaling, and alcohol toxicology across the lifespan. The Center has international leaders in the study of ion channel regulation, protein kinases, neurodegeneration, fetal teratogenesis, genetics and behavioral pharmacology. This position is located in the Besheer Lab at the Center for Alcohol Studies. The principal purpose of this position is to facilitate and conduct research focused on examing the neurobiological processes that underlie addiction. The successful candidate will be performing standardized procedures that are used in behavioral pharmacological research, including the daily conduct of behavioral experiments in rats. The candidate must be capable of working independently, and also as part of a team. A second major component of this position is to assist in conducting molecular analyses that will complement the behavioral studies. A third component of this position is to help maintain the computer-generated data and to conduct standardized data analysis and graphing using computer software. The employee will be required to keep detailed and accurate records of experimental test procedures and results, and present results to the PI. The employee will also assist with maintaining budgets, ordering laboratory supplies and keeping accurate inventory. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential. |
