Job Summary

This Research Speech-Language Pathologist I position is ideal for an ASHA-certified SLP who has interest in specializing in treating speech sound disorders in clinical research participants, while contributing to the evidence base for the field. This is the entry-level staff therapist position designed for the new graduate with less than 12 months experience as a licensed therapist.  Under general direction, the entry-level SLP will follow study procedures to conduct approved clinical trials, administer standardized and researcher-administered assessments and treatment, and must be willing to learn to deliver speech sound interventions with high fidelity as part of speech therapy sessions.

Additional duties include project management; participant recruitment; maintaining and managing research data and documentation; collaborating with clinical and research experts in speech-language pathology; and assisting with dissemination of research findings. The position may be appropriate for speech-language clinicians interested in pursuing a PhD or completing postdoctoral training.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UCSF is home to leading physicians and scientists dedicated to treating patients with neurosurgical disorders and to the search for better therapies and cures. Required Qualifications

  • Possession of a degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited professional educational program
  • Licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California upon start date
  • CPR certification from American Heart Assocation (AHA)
  • New graduate with less than 12 months experience as a licensed therapist
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress
  • Basic computer skills in word processing and on line communication
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills
  • Must be comfortable with learning to use new technology in a clinical research setting
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at various UCSF campuses

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior speech language pathology experience in an academic medical center environment
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team

License/Certification

  • Licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California upon start date
  • CPR certification from American Heart Assocation (AHA)
