Cornell University

Job Description

Research Associate - Hanson Lab MBG

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

A position for a Research Associate is available to work in the lab of Maureen Hanson in the Dept. of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.  The research project concerns the molecular basis of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), a disabling illness with similarities to long COVID.  The Research Associate will collaborate with researchers in the Cornell Center for Enervating Neuroimmune Disease (https://neuroimmune.cornell.edu ).  Perform sophisticated mathematical and statistical analyses of molecular data derived from assays performed on cells and tissues from individuals with ME/CFS and control subjects.  Clinical data will also be correlated with molecular data and modeling performed to detect possible sub-groups.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research: 100%.  The Research Associate will analyze individual datasets from a variety of types of assays, identifying differences between parameters in patients vs. controls and using multi-omic methods to identify associations of measures from different assay types.  Datasets already available include metabolomics, proteomics, single cell genomics, exercise physiology, serology, flow cytometry, and clinical characteristics.  Determine whether or not there are biomarkers that could be developed into a diagnostic test as well as biomarkers that will reveal new information about the pathophysiology of the disease.  Use methods such as linear mixed effects modeling, correlation analyses, principal component analysis (PCA), pathway enrichment analyses, bootstrapping statistics methods, cell and tissue type enrichment, time series fuzzy c-means clustering, uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP), t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), and Sankey diagrams.  Apply multivariate model-based clustering with finite Gaussian mixture models.  The Research Associate will prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and will be encouraged to apply for research grants and fellowships.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience that provides background in computational biology, data science, and molecular biology with experience in statistical analysis.  The candidate should have good communication skills and be interested in collaborating with a research team comprised of postdoctoral associates, M.S. research support specialists, graduate students, and undergraduates.

SALARY:

$61,640 -  $62,580

SUPERVISION:

Dr. Hanson

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

The Research Associate will assist in supervising an undergraduate lab assistant or a student taking research for credit on the topic of statistical analysis of ME/CFS data.  The RA may also assist in training of graduate students and Research Support Specialists.
