Organizational Overview

The High Energy Theory Group (HET) has active programs in many areas of theoretical particle physics.  There are strong efforts in neutrino physics, Beyond the Standard Model phenomenology, precision calculations for the LHC and intensity frontier, overlaps of particle physics and cosmology, and lattice gauge theory. The lattice efforts span weak interaction physics, precision calculations of (g-2) and PDF determinations, and the development of new algorithms, among others.


Position Description

In order to strengthen our future efforts, the HET Group has two Postdoctoral Associate opportunities available on or around October 1, 2024.  In this role the selected candidates will collaborate with group members in performing original theoretical physics research in precision calculations for the LHC, beyond the standard model phenomenology, neutrino theory, the interplay of particle physics with cosmology or lattice gauge theory.  This research is expected to be published in scientific journals and be presented at major conferences. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 A Research Associate for the High Energy Theory Group will:

  • Propose, plan and perform scientific investigations in pursuit of scientific and technological excellence in all aspects of Particle Physics.
  • Communicate research progress, challenges, achievements, and engage within and beyond the group with new potential collaborations.
  • Publish results of research and development in peer-reviewed journals and conduct presentations at major conferences.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The position requires a Ph.D. in Physics
  • Problem-solving skills to formulate high-quality research ideas and directions in collaboration with mentors in the HET Group.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals and delivery of presentations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •  Knowledge of a wide variety of High Energy Theory research methodologies

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for Research Associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of five years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Initial 3-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding
