Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for The Yadavalli lab at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University. The position will perform cutting-edge research in RNA biology using high-throughput sequencing methods. We are seeking motivated candidates, who are enthusiastic to train and build their skills in the generation of next-generation sequencing libraries.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Works with sensitive, small-volume RNA and protein samples that require careful handling.
  • Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.
  • Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
  • Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
  • Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s).
  • One (1) year of research study experience.
  • An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques.
  • The ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology or a related discipline.
  • Experience with protein expression and purification, experience with training undergraduates in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience with high-throughput sequencing library preparations is highly desirable.
Equipment Utilized
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint or Keynote.
  • Must be familiar with standard molecular biology and microbiology equipment including gel electrophoresis, spectrophotometer, table-top centrifuge, gel-imaging, etc.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Able to stand, lift, bend.
  • Able to occasionally lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Able to reach and grasp with arms and hands.
  • Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors and toxic chemicals.
  • Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
Special Conditions
  • Experience with DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, transformation, aseptic technique, and handling bacterial/ cell cultures.
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience in molecular biology and techniques relevant to RNA biology.
