Position Highlights The Department of Cellular & Molecular Medicine is seeking a full-time Research Professional I to work in Dr. Shanna Hamilton’s research laboratory. The Hamilton lab studies mechanisms of calcium-dependent arrhythmia in models of both inherited and acquired heart disease, from molecule-cell-organ-organism level, with the goal of finding new therapeutic strategies to prevent arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. The researcher may be responsible for performing basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques in a laboratory including western blotting, cell culture, qPCR, and confocal microscopy. They will assist with animal husbandry and isolation of cardiac myocytes. They will also assist with laboratory management including ordering supplies, inventory of biological samples, and maintenance/training of instruments.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design, organize, manage, and carry out analytical techniques and subsequent analysis to drive the PI's research.
  • Design research methods in collaboration with senior researchers in Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM). Collect and analyze data, and create databases for research purposes. Work with researchers to identify and recommend solutions to problems. 
  • Use analyzed data to prepare research reports, write literature reviews, and support development of grant applications. 
  • Manage rodent colonies and assist with husbandry.
  • Isolate cardiac myocytes for primary cell culture.
  • Perform mRNA and protein expression and structure and function studies using qPCR, gel electrophoresis, chromatography, western blot, and recombinant protein expression.
  • Carry out specialized techniques including live-cell confocal microscopy.
  • Assist and train PhD students and postdoctoral fellows to perform and design experiments and on the various techniques utilized in the lab. Direct and assist staff research technicians.
  • Assist with laboratory management, including ordering, inventory, and maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • One (1) year of relevant work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications* Prior UA research experience.
* Rodent husbandry experience.
* Biochemistry (western blot) experience.
* Cell culture experience.
* Experience with statistical analysis and preparation and curation of data for manuscripts.
* 2-4 years of research laboratory experience.
