Position Description:

The Department of Pediatrics, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine as part of the newly created Gene and Cell Therapy Program for Treatment of Hearing and Balance Disorders invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position with expertise in inner ear biology at the Assistant Professor level.  This position includes a 12-month appointment, fringe benefits, competitive start-up package, laboratory space, excellent core facilities and extensive opportunities for collaborative research, and participation in graduate training programs and junior faculty development programs.


All applicants must have a PhD and/or MD degree. Existing funding is not required for the application. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability in research with clear potential for supporting an innovative and productive research program.  Preference will be given to individuals with a strong publication record who have developed and/or utilize state-of-the art techniques to address emerging and critical questions in inner ear biology. In particular, we are interested in individuals with a research focus on stem cells, degeneration, regeneration, development, and genome engineering. Applicants will be judged on their potential to initiate and maintain a vigorous, independent research program and to teach and train students and postdoctoral fellows. The successful candidate should have the demonstrated capacity to foster an environment in which excellence in research, teaching, and scholarship can flourish, as well as experience and interest in developing and leading research programs.


Desirable qualifications:


Research focus in one or more of the following areas stem cells, degeneration, regeneration, development and genome engineering


Interest in training students and postdoctoral fellows


Demonstrated capacity to foster in an environment in which excellence in research teaching and scholarship can flourish and interest in developing and leading research programs.


The University of Iowa has dedicated substantial new investments for Neuroscience which consists of a community of more than 100 faculty members across 5 colleges and 26 departments and includes the recent founding of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute and creation of a new undergraduate major in Neuroscience. In particular, the University of Iowa offers a rich and highly collaborative group of researchers focused on auditory neuroscience that spans across several colleges involving both basic science and clinical departments.  The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology consists of 24 primary and 8 secondary faculty members with strengths in cell and developmental biology, neurobiology, cancer biology, vascular biology, stem-cell biology, molecular medicine, cystic fibrosis, and gene therapy.   The department is also the administrative home of the University's Gene Therapy Center, an entity that funds, and otherwise supports, research in molecular medicine.
