Job Summary

Translational neuroscience laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) seeks a qualified, experienced and reliable Staff Research Associate (SRA-I). 

The SRA I will join a highly interactive, innovative and intellectual environment.  NIH-funded research in the Baraban Lab is based on a multi-disciplinary strategy incorporating zebrafish, rodents and California sea lions.  Understanding the fundamental basis of epilepsies, especially those that occur in children, and using this information to develop novel treatments is our overall mission. 

We are currently seeking a highly motivated SRA-I to join our group and support development of interneuron-based cell transplantation therapies.

Under direct supervision the primary focus of the work will involve assisting/supporting graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in (i) perfusion and immunohistochemistry studies on tissue sections from transplanted animals; (ii) genotyping of mice; (iii) confocal microscopy and image processing and (iv) assistance in behavioral rodent studies.

Additional responsibilities will include maintaining animal colonies, general lab maintenance, refilling stock solutions and data entry. Qualified applicants will be organized, highly motivated, and comfortable working in a vibrant academic setting. Applicants must have the ability to maintain detailed research records, manage multiple duties simultaneously, and perform assigned tasks independently.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UCSF is home to leading physicians and scientists dedicated to treating patients with neurosurgical disorders and to the search for better therapies and cures. Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Familiarity with RT-PCR genotyping skills
  • Experience with rodents
  • Familiarity with immunohistochemistry protocols
  • Familiarity with confocal imaging microscopy
  • We are specifically looking for highly self-motivated individual with an analytical and innovative personality, the ability to work in an academic environment, and excellent communication and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least six months of laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A background in molecular cell biology (genotyping) and zebrafish husbandry
