Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor for the School of Communication and Information- Dean’s Office. This position provides admission, retention, and student services support to students in degree, non-degree, and non-credit programs of the School of Communication and Information, with a focus on graduate students.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Works with the Assistant Dean III for Graduate Students, Associate Director for Student Services, and academic program directors to provide information and guidance to SC&I students and to develop, implement, and evaluate program policies that serve to meet the needs of students in the areas of academics, student life and activities, and career development.
  • Provides academic and administrative support to special population students, including dual degree students.
  • Provides guidance to prospective students throughout the admissions process.
  • Uses professional judgment to evaluate academic credentials in order to recommend admission decisions.
  • Provides academic, personal, and career counseling and advice.
  • Designs orientation programs for new students.
  • Designs intervention programs for students experiencing difficulty.
  • Develops special projects, activities, and rich media communication.
  • Provides resolutions to an assortment of academic and administrative problems.
  • Provides analytical reports to faculty and administrators.
  • Serves as a liaison to university departments and offices.
  • Employs judgment within defined practices and procedures.
  • Works independently within broadly defined work objectives.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, psychology, counseling, education, social work, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of student development and academic theories, methodologies, and current practices in higher education.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience in higher education student services that demonstrates skills in academic advising, student support services, online learning environments, and retention practices.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle complex situations with diplomacy.
  • Computer proficiency in generating analysis of data.
  • Strong commitment to providing outstanding student services is fundamental.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree since the position primarily supports graduate students and is expected to provide developmental advising with an understanding of the fundamentals of counseling.
  • Experience with customer relationship management and retention software.
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience in higher education student services that demonstrates skills in academic advising, student support services, and retention practices.

  • MS Office suite and other standard office software.
  • University systems including IMS, course scheduling, and other reporting and data tools.
  • Cloud computing programs such as Salesforce.com.
  • Online learning management systems.
  • Web-conferencing software.
  • Collaborative software for document creation and sharing.

  • Web design and maintenance software.
  • Standard office equipment such as desktop computers, copiers, printers.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift items up to 10 lbs.
  • Must be able to participate in room set up for events including moving tables and chairs.
