Position Summary:


Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the  Child Health Institute at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. 
Under the direction of Dr. Chiara Manzini (PI) the Postdoc will be responsible for the design, analysis, interpretation, and presentation in oral and written form of the experiment focused on studying zebrafish models of congenital muscular dystrophy caused by defects in glycosylation. The project is part of a larger effort in the lab to study the genetics of congenital muscular dystrophy and develop novel targeted treatments.    
The Postdoc is expected to have expertise in zebrafish anatomy and husbandry, confocal microscopy, and pharmacology. They should also have a broad knowledge of developmental biology, biochemistry, and medicinal chemistry. In addition, the Postdoc will participate in lab meetings, research in progress seminars, presentations at conferences. They will prepare manuscripts based on their research, aid in developing the PI's grant applications and will be expected to apply for personal grant funding.   
As part of their career development to transition to the next phase of their career, the applicant will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills. Multiple resources for career development to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Design, perform and analyze experiments to study the disease progression in zebrafish models of congenital muscular dystrophy by studying histology and protein glycosylation. 
  • Test novel therapies for congenital muscular dystrophy to establish preclinical animal models. 
  • Perform animal husbandry on zebrafish colony to generate the experimental animals needed, monitor animal health, and ensure that all animal protocol rules and regulations are followed. 
  • Compile and analyze data with appropriate statistical analysis, conclusions, and future directions in support of further CHI research. 
  • Keep up to date on the relevant literature in both peer-reviewed and preprint form and assist the PI in the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications relevant to own experimental work. 
  • Assist in the instruction and training of students (undergraduate and graduate) in laboratory techniques and procedures in cell biology and biochemistry to carry out research assignments.

 

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Candidate must hold a PhD in Biochemistry, Toxicology, Genetics or other relevant biological sciences.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:


Physical Demands:
    • Must be able to perform laboratory research.
    •  Must be able to work with zebrafish. 
    • Exposure: laboratory environment, moderate noise, hazardous chemicals.
    • Some lifting may be required: fish tanks, laboratory items and/or boxes.
    • Walking, standing, sitting is required.

 


Work Environment: 
  • Must pass employee health clearance, TB test and required safety and animal training.
  • Must follow all safety precautions in the laboratory, as required.

 

Salary: Salary Range; based on experience.
