Position Summary
Provides a broad range of support for the scientific and research activities of the School of Medicine’s faculty, staff, and students; major areas of focus include providing expertise in the application of biological and genomic information databases and software tools for analyzing sequence and microarray data, collaborating with investigators on designing novel genomic analysis methods, assisting students in applying genomic analysis methods and software tools to their work, evaluating and coordinating support and licensing for new resources and tools of interest to the campus community; works directly with campus research programs, labs, core facilities, and departments to assist in the development of new information services and resources, and to plan and develop education and training programs; facilitates the collaboration among the medical school’s research labs by identifying and effectively communicating potential synergies.
Bernard Becker medical library’s research services division provides a broad range of educational programs and services in support of the research activities of the School of Medicine’s faculty, staff, and students. Specifically, the division provides introductory training in biomedical research computing, delivers educational offerings and services in the areas of data management and sharing, and supports awareness, access, and training on a variety of software tools for biomedical data analysis and visualization. In addition, the division provides a host of customized programs, services and expertise to assist faculty, investigators, and students in navigating the complex and ever-changing research publishing landscape with support around publishing options, public access mandates, copyright, author rights, assessment of research impact, and the dissemination of research findings. In these capacities, the research services division plays a key role in supporting the medical school’s research mission.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides expertise and training for individuals, departments and research teams regarding the effective application of biological and genomic databases and tools for specific research problems or for assisting scientists and students in visualizing, analyzing, manipulating and/or interpreting data.
  • Collaborates with faculty and principal investigators on the application of domain-specific information resources and software tools in research projects and as components of training programs and grant proposals.
  • Serves as a campus resource for information and assistance on library-supported software tools for analysis and manipulation of research data.
  • Works closely with research community to identify, design and implement services and programs to support biological and genomic sciences through activities such as needs assessments and the evaluation and implementation of new tools and resources.
  • Stays abreast of scientific advances leading to newly developed databases, resources, software tools and experimental approaches and develop innovative methods to disseminate this information to the scientific community.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with research groups to identify areas of interest and address needs.
  • Provides presentations on topics and resources of interest to scientific audiences.
  • Works with vendors to coordinate licensing as well as training and support programs for library-supported software tools.
  • Participates in library-wide initiatives, programs and professional development activities.
  • Support faculty, staff, and students in the identification of repositories suitable for sharing their data with the broader public, providing assistance with data submission requirements, policies and procedures when needed.
  • Aid researchers in the formation and implementation of data management and sharing plans that meet funder requirements.
  • Serve as a campus resource for information and assistance related to data storage, retention, access, stewardship and ownership.
  • Stay abreast of evolving data management and sharing requirements from publishers and funding agencies and assist researchers as they navigate these changes.
  • Support researchers wanting to access shared data for further analysis, providing assistance with data reuse guidelines and parameters when needed.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with research groups to identify and monitor evolving areas of interest and need related to data management and sharing.
  • Stay abreast of national and international trends in research data practices.
  • Serve as a bridge to the more extensive resources and services available from the Institute for Informatics, data science & biostatistics.
  • Participate in library-wide initiatives, programs, and professional development activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with software tools and techniques for data analysis; experience in classroom teaching and/or development of training materials.
  • Experience in consulting with and training scientists and students on the use of information tools in a wide range of scientific disciplines is desirable.
  • Familiarity with data management and sharing requirements of publishers and funding agencies.
  • Experience writing and implementing data management and sharing plans.
  • Familiarity with biomedical data repositories and experience with data curation, sharing and reuse.
  • Appreciation for role of metadata and demonstrated experience with technical side of data management and sharing.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, and commitment to professional development.
  • Experience in classroom teaching and/or development of training materials.
  • Strong user-focused public service orientation.
  • Familiarity with biological information databases, particularly resources available from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to provide presentations, as well as a commitment to professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability with user-focused public service orientation.


Required Qualifications

Ph.D. with at least three years of postdoctoral experience in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or a related field, and experience in a laboratory or other research setting.

Salary Range
$54,100.00 - $98,100.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
