William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has a three-part mission to conduct research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry and the public. VIMS provides these services to Virginia, the nation and the world. Chartered in 1940, VIMS is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. The School of Marine Science (SMS) at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for William & Mary. It offers outstanding education and research opportunities for students who seek advanced careers in academia, government or the private sector.
Position Summary
The Dean and Director’s office provides leadership to VIMS/SMS in the pursuit of excellence in the academic, research and advisory missions of the Institute. VIMS recognizes that the key to improving success at our institute and in our disciplinary areas, while expanding impact on diverse communities, lies with focused investment in our people, strengthening a culture of inclusion and belonging, and developing practices that actively identify and address barriers to equity.
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is proud to invite qualified applicants for a newly established position of Director for Inclusive Excellence and Belonging.
Reporting to the Dean and Director, The Director for Inclusive Excellence and Belonging at VIMS will translate strategies into tactical plans with clear actions, accountability, and goals to promote the dimensions of Inclusive Excellence through diverse, equitable, and inclusive practices. They will have the authority to envision, strategize, advocate, implement, and document processes, initiatives, and measurable actions, leading to more purposeful integration of the institute’s values.
The Director’s primary focus will be to foster an inclusive and equitable community and culture that values a diversity of lived experiences, thoughts, and expertise, recognizing the importance of these connections to help individuals flourish and in supporting the robust collaborations needed to solve the grand challenges of today and tomorrow.
Under direction of the Dean and Director, and in collaboration with other leaders and stakeholders, the Director of Inclusive Excellence and Belonging will manage the DEI goals and objectives as outlined in the VIMS Inclusive Excellence Plan , and lead efforts associated with inclusive excellence and belonging. As a member of the Dean and Director’s cabinet, the Director of Inclusive Excellence and Belonging will be a contributing thought-partner to VIMS senior leadership, sections, faculty, staff, students, and the community, and will work closely with the William & Mary Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
Major Duties and Responsibilities

The Director for Inclusive Excellence and Belonging will work directly with the Dean and Director, the senior leadership team, and the VIMS community. Primary responsibilities will include:
  • Strategy: Implementing and executing VIMS strategic priorities aimed at transforming and strengthening current policies, procedures, and structures to promote accountability, oversight, and transparency.
  • Recruitment & Retention: Collaborating with HR and VIMS leaders to develop and implement strategies to recruit and retain diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Graduate Program & Post-doc support: Establishing and sustaining state-supported postdoctoral research fellows’ program, with the goal of expanding pathways for diverse candidates to move into faculty positions in marine science.
  • Learning & Development: Planning, managing, and assisting with implementation of learning and development opportunities to further professional development pathways, expand support, and allocate resources that maximize access for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Partnership: Coordinating with the William & Mary offices, schools, departments, and Diversity Office and serving as a member of William & Mary committees and councils to support university wide programing.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position).
Additional experience and competencies include:
  • Experience implementing inclusive initiatives and evidence of success in developing and supporting initiatives that promote belonging;
  • Professional experience in workplace culture and climate development;
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing, managing, and developing strategic initiatives, analyzing policies and workforce data, and providing guidance on priorities, strategic plans, and policies;
  • Working knowledge of and experience with collecting and analyzing appropriate data to inform, document, and evaluate strategic priorities and progress;
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and manage budgets and administer fiscal priorities;
  • Experience identifying, collaborating, and obtaining external funding opportunities;
  • Demonstrated productivity in both independent and collaborative work environments;
  • Strong written, oral, and presentation skills with the ability to develop present information that is credible and persuasive, using both numerical and qualitative measures; and
  • Demonstrated record of working effectively with leaders, staff, and other constituent groups
Preferred Qualifications
  • Work experience in a post-secondary academic setting, with an understanding of faculty and staff career trajectories and the intentions of a research institute.
  • Experience collaborating to manage budgets and to oversee office processes.
  • Experience designing and conducting peer workshops and training sessions.
Advertised Pay Range Up to $125,000 commensurate with experience
