Staff Scientist, Microbial Pathogenesis

Job Description

Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development , Bethesda, Maryland

The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is seeking to recruit an outstanding Staff Scientist with expertise in cellular microbiology and imaging to join the Section on Microbial Pathogenesis.
The mission of the Section on Microbial Pathogenesis is to decipher host-pathogen interactions at the molecular, cellular, and structural level by studying the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of a potentially fatal respiratory infection known as Legionnaires' disease. In the environment, L. pneumophila exists as an intracellular parasite of single cell organisms know as amoeba. Upon inhalation by humans, L. pneumophila can also infect and replicate within alveolar macrophages of the lung. The Section on Microbial Pathogenesis aims to shed light into the underlying virulence processes in order to develop novel, mechanism-based therapeutic strategies. The Section on Microbial Pathogenesis has strong interactions with a wide range of independent research groups, and the position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside of the NIH.
The existing faculty in the NICHD DIR is an outstanding group of internationally recognized biomedical researchers covering a wide range of basic and clinical research topics (please see https://www.nichd.nih.gov/about/org/dir ) complemented by the other research institutes within the DIR (please see https://www.nih.gov/research-training#campus )

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, completed formal mentored postdoctoral training in related research areas, and an outstanding publication record. The ideal candidate must have expertise in microbiology, cell biology, protein biochemistry, and various live and fixed cell imaging techniques. Demonstrated experience in staff training and mentoring, outstanding communication and time management skills, and a commitment to conducting high quality research related to infectious diseases are desirable.
Appointees may be US citizens, resident aliens, or non-resident aliens with or eligible to obtain a valid employment-authorized visa.

To Apply:

Applicants should submit a 1-2 page descriptive letter of research interest, curriculum vitae and complete bibliography, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to: Dr. Matthias Machner, Section Head, Section on Microbial Pathogenesis, NICHD at the following email address Matthias.Machner@nih.gov .

This post will be available until September 01, 2023 or until filled.

This position is subject to a background check.
The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs. Applications from women, minorities and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged.
