Duke Biomedical Engineering (in a collaborative NIH grant effort with Neurosurgery) is seeking a post doctoral engineer to interface with a medical device in a Microsoft Windows environment and wearables (Apple Watch). The post-doc will work closely with research and clinical staff studying deep brain stimulation for treatment of Parkinson’s disease. 
We recently received a second four-year grant and need a programmer to extend our existing application to meet the needs of the new planned experiments in an FDA (under an IDE) and Duke (IRB) environment. The developed application will interface with an implanted medical device to change device settings as well as display and save time series data from the device. The incoming data will be analyzed in real-time using an arbitrary controller designed by research staff, implementing closed loop device control using several defined control policies. This position may be extended to interface with additional devices for future studies including intraoperative work. 
DUTIES & WORK PERFORMED: 
• Implement application from defined requirements using existing API. 
• Work with research staff to design and perform application testing for FDA evaluation. 
• Thoroughly document coding and testing activities. 
• Train research staff to use the developed application and meet with patients to understand their needs and device performance.

EDUCATION: 
Required: Doctoral degree in a related field (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related field) or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. 
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS: 
Required: 
• Experience with C# and Python. 
• Experience with embedded systems. 
• Low-latency (near real-time) and multithreaded solutions. 
• Ability to work independently in a small team. • Familiarity with best coding practices, documentation, and git. 
Preferred: 
• Experience with clinical trials, medical devices and FDA or other highly regulated industry. 
• Experience with control theory (PID, neural networks etc). 
• Experience working with patients. 
• Experience performing scientific experiments. 
• Experience with deep brain stimulation or EEG.
