Position Summary | The Post-doctoral Research Associate will join the Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences working under the direction of Prof. Antonia Sebastian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The post-doctoral research associate is expected to conduct research on future flood risk in the US using hydrodynamic models and downscaled precipitation estimates under future climate conditions. Specifically, their research will examine how flooding will evolve with a focus on projecting future pluvial and fluvial hazards and their impacts to critical infrastructure (incl. housing, transportation, municipal buildings) in communities across North Carolina. They will be expected to contribute to several manuscripts through research design, analysis, writing, project management, and mentorship of students, as well as contribute to the development of new toolboxes intended to be used by city and state government officials. The selected candidate will work closely with researchers at NC State in the State Climate Office and the NOAA Carolinas Climate Adaptation Partnership (formerly RISA). They will also have the opportunity to engage with researchers across UNC and, if desired, may also gain teaching experience. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extension. There is flexibility regarding location and remote work. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged. The cover letter and/or research statement should include information about future research goals and vision in addition to describing past work. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | The candidate must hold a PhD in environmental studies/sciences, engineering, geography, geology, or related discipline. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Prior experience building and validating hydrodynamic models is essential. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Successful candidates will also demonstrate an understanding of how to assess climate risk and/or evaluate flood adaptation strategies, and may have prior experience with community-based or applied research. |
