Job Summary

Our long-term goal is to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of injury after neonatal and childhood stoke using novel age-appropriate rodent stroke models developed in my laboratory. With these models, we identify the role of neuroinflammatory mechanisms in injury and test therapeutic agents.

The chosen candidate will be trained by senior personnel in the lab brain slicing techniques on cryostat, histological stains and analysis of histological slides. Incumbent will assist senior personnel with breading of mouse colonies, physiological monitoring, and sacrifice of neonatal and juvenile mice. At later point the chosen candidate will learn various biochemical techniques and related data analysis.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and organized Staff Research Associate (SRA)  to assist in experimental studies on basic mechanisms of neonatal and childhood stoke. SRA should have BA/BS in Chemistry/Biology or related science, preferably upper division physiology courses taken, and experience in working with laboratory animals. Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently and with great attention to detail, and experience in word processing, Excel and data entry is expected.

The duties will include: brain sectioning on cryostat, performing and analyzing histological stains, preparation of reagents and everyday lab keep-up. Over time, contribution to maintaining transgenic mouse colonies, monitoring mice, performing injections of therapeutic agents and animal sacrifice by perfusion-fixation can be added to the scope of duties. The SRA will have an opportunity to gain experience in light and fluorescence microscopy, spectrophotometry and biochemical assays such as Western Blot, ELISA and/or flow cytometry.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience; 
  • Upper-division physiology courses taken 
  • Conceptual understanding of basic physiology and immunology 
  • Experience in working with laboratory animals 
  • Knowledge of scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes)  
  • Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook  
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize  
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Meticulous record-keeping abilities  

Note: Classification and salary will depend on the qualifications of the applicant.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Summer research internship in wet lab with exposure to lab instrumentation and in vitro disease models.
  • Exposure to research using animal models to understand human diseases.
  • Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise.
  • Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction.
  • Able to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques.
