Department Summary

The mission of the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is to provide exceptional, inclusive, integrated health care. We promote student success and wellness through education, advocacy, and outreach to the University of Denver community. The HCC is an on-campus health facility open 8am-5pm M-F with evening hours until 7pm two to three evenings a week during the academic year and provides a wide range of on-site medical and mental health services. Position Summary

The Postdoctoral Resident is designed for candidates with a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology who are interested in working in a college counseling center that combines clinical work, supervision, training, and outreach to develop depth as well as breadth of professional skills. In addition to the Postdoctoral position, the HCC offers five APA-accredited Doctoral Internships through the DU GSPP Consortium, five primary Graduate Student Trainee positions, one psychiatric resident, as well as secondary practicum placements.

The Postdoctoral resident provides direct counseling/psychotherapy to DU undergraduate and graduate students as well as crisis intervention and outreach/prevention services to the DU community. This position works within an integrated care model including primary care, mental health, gender violence advocacy services, and health promotion within the Health and Counseling Center. The Postdoctoral resident leads groups and conducts workshops as needed and may be involved in providing group supervision with doctoral-level trainees. This is a full-time position that requires some evening clinic hours (until 7 pm) and occasional evening and weekend outreach/crisis events. The Postdoctoral resident reports to the Training Director and is supervised by a licensed clinical psychologist.

The HCC provides some benefits including insurance, holiday allowance, as well as sick and vacation time (80 hours vacation + 40 hours sick).

Essential Functions

  • Provide direct clinical services including intakes, individual, couples, and group psychotherapy to DU students.
  • Support programs and provides outreach for the campus community that dovetail with the broader initiatives within the Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence division related to inclusivity, diversity and equity.
  • Participate in the Power, Privilege and Oppression Training Seminar twice per month.
  • Participate in the Psychopharmacology Training Seminar once per month.
  • Provide crisis intervention services via our daytime crisis system (Counselor of the Day and Same-Day Access coverage).
  • Provide supervision to trainees as needed/available.
  • Participate in Doctoral Intern, Postdoctoral Resident and Graduate Student Trainee recruitment.
  • Provide consultation services as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with various departments within the Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence division.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This position requires sophisticated written and verbal communication skills, and involves meetings with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners. This position also involves writing educational content, memos, and reports.

Mathematical Skills:

A basic understanding of math is required. The ability to be given a budget and stay within it is essential. Expertise in quantitative and qualitative data analysis is strongly preferred.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Able to understand and relate to complex theories behind several related concepts.
  • Able to concentrate on fine details with constant interruption.
  • Able to remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others for a long period of time.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (by the start of the residency) from an APA-Accredited program.
  • Completion of a year-long APA-Accredited doctoral internship.
  • Experience with supervision, crisis intervention, outreach/prevention, and groups.
  • Interest and experience in working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of Inclusive Excellence/Equity/Anti-Oppression work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience in a university/college counseling center.

Work Schedule

The duration of this position is for one year from August 2023 to August 2024.

Hourly Rate

The hourly rate for this position is $26.57/hour, amounting to $52,000 per year.  

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
