Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.


In this exciting role, you will conduct research and develop the distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS). Will train under the direction and supervision of faculty mentors in preparation for academic or research careers. This postdoc will participate in the distributed fiber optic sensing technologies by developing the optical instrumentation and FPGA based signal generation/detecting and control systems.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Participate in the continued development testing and performance improvement of optical frequency domain reflectometry.

  • Contribute to the design and implement modules in hardware, FPGA gateware and software, optical hardware as needed to improve the system performance and scalability

  • Participate in exploring new technologies for optical fiber sensing technologies.

  • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Prepare research papers for publication and present results at seminars and conferences.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participate in the on-going research and development for the other control and instrumentation projects, including but not limited to the particle accelerator RF control.

 

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or a related field within the last 3 years.

  • Demonstrated research and development experience in one or more of the following technologies:

    • The RF and electronics hardware design, including the printed circuit board design and testing and chassis to system design;

    • Embedded system programming, including the low level software driver and API development.

  • Demonstrated programming experience in Python or Verilog, SystemVerilog.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work productively independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with open source CAD programs e.g. KiCAD and FreeCAD.

  • Optical/electrical modulation, optical fiber operation.

  • Experience with optical fiber based sensing technologies.

  • Familiar with Xilinx FPGA development tool chain and the open source simulation & verification (e.g. Verilator).

  • Comfortable in a Linux environment.

  • Knowledge of machine learning is a plus.

 

Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $4,636-$7,371 and is expected to start at $6,477 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
