Description: The Department of Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Tennessee (UT) seeks applications for a Research Associate to work under the supervision of Dr. Francisco Barrera. The Barrera lab investigates the role of membrane receptors in cancer progression, and develops peptide-based strategies for cancer imaging and drug delivery, using biophysics, biochemistry, cell biology and cell culture models. This Research Associate will perform experiments using a wide range of biophysical and cell biology experiments, including the culture and manipulation of cancer cell lines. Biophysical experiments will involve the preparation of lipid vesicles, and the study using fluorescence and similar techniques to study how different peptides interact with lipid membranes. The Research Associate will be tasked with leading the conception of research projects, using their independency and leadership to design experiments directly for him/her.

Duties/Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities for this position include: · The Research Associate will perform cell biology experiments, including the growth, manipulation and experimentation with cancer cells and other cell types. The Research Associate will independently carry out these experiments, under the direction of the PI. · The Research Associate will be tasked with leading the conception of research projects, using their independency and leadership to design experiments directly for him/her, and also in collaboration with other members of the laboratory, in particular graduate students. With the guidance of faculty, interpret and present results to fellow lab members. Additionally, the candidate will perform other functions related to research, including data analysis, and data presentation, lab meeting, and manuscript preparation. Minimum Required Education and Experience: Preferred Education and Experience Required Skills and Abilities: · Expertise working in the areas of biochemistry, biophysics and cellular biology, including high ability in the culture of human cells, including cancer cells, and the use of molecular and cellular biology techniques. Support: $70,000 per years University of Tennessee non-exempt staff fringe benefits.
