Position Highlights The post-doctoral fellow will work with the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis Program’s publicly available DataBase (FIADB) to (1) create an analytical interface enabling its use as a time series of repeat measurements of trees and plots and (2) conduct research on forest demography, including publication in the peer-reviewed literature.

Duties & Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • (1) Creation and publication of an R package or other open-source tool to create data objects aligning repeat measurements of trees and forest plots in the FIA DataBase for analysis.
  • (2) Analysis and publication of forest demography trends at the US national scale.
  • (3) Mentorship of earlier-career scientists in the research group.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in ecology, forestry, or a related field with strong statistical and data science experience, or a PhD in statistics, applied mathematics, or a related field, with experience in plant or forest ecology.
  • The successful candidate will have strong experience scripting in the language R.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in the principles and practices of open-source data science, including scripting in a version-controlled environment (e.g., GitHub), publication of R packages, and work with large relational databases, as well as statistical and demographic modeling, and writing experience.
  • Experience publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and team science experience (i.e., collaboration, mentorship).
