The Division of Materials Science and Engineering and Critical Materials Institute is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.

This position will perform integrated research activities and provide advanced scientific and technical support for existing and forthcoming multiple projects initially and primarily focus on discovering and characterizing permanent magnetic materials with free or reduced rare earth content or modified microstructure. Major duties and responsibilities include: development and implementation of innovative techniques for growth and discovery of rare earth-free or reduced, or structure-modified magnetic materials; development of thermal mechanical process for fabricating permanent magnet with nanocrystalline grains; carry out experimental investigations of phase, microstructure, thermal stability, magnetic and mechanical properties of magnetic compounds; establish the relevance of the effects of composition, phase, microstructure, and processing on magnetic and mechanical properties; interact with scientists from laboratories, universities, and industries in order to exchange knowledge and to perform joint research efforts; and present investigated results at technical society meetings and publish scientific papers in peer review publications.

This position requires the incumbent to plan, initiate, and execute research activities in collaboration with multiple PIs, meet the requirements and milestones of projects on time. The ability to interact with experienced experimental and theoretical scientists and work within the group is important to success in the position.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

 Ph.D. must be completed prior to start date.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated research experience in various aspects of preparation and characterization of inter-metallic compounds and related magnetic materials.
  • Experience with reparation of alloy samples, mainly including arc/induction-melting, melt-spinning, powder metallurgy, glass work, heat treatment, vacuum sintering, hot pressing, chemical or physical coating (e.g., CVD, magnetron sputtering, E-beam / thermal evaporation, or electrodeposition).
  • Experience with materials characterization methods, mainly including X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), SQUID magnetometer, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), metallography, mechanical test (hardness tensile, compression, and impact).
  • Experience with software, including XRD Gsas/FullProf rietveld, Origin, LabView, and other data analysis and collection software.
