Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office of Research, Economic Development and Engagement (REDE) is responsible for research policy and integrity, research administration, and sponsored project contract negotiations across ECU. REDE leads economic and community engagement initiatives including partnerships with public sector agencies, industry, military, and other organizations in pursuit of scholarly activities, economic development, and community engagement. REDE directs new intellectual enterprises, including technology transfer. REDE is responsible for the following units under its umbrella: Office of Research Administration, Office of Engaged Research, Office of Research Development, Office of Continuing and Professional Education, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Office of Undergraduate Research, Office of Research and Innovation Campus Development, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Office of Human Subjects Protections, Office of Licensing and Commercialization, Office of National Security and Industry Initiatives, Office of Research Integrity and Compliance, Compliance Monitoring, and the Small Business and Technology Development Center.
The Office of Research Development includes the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and Offices of Undergraduate Research. The Office of Research Development is responsible for providing professional development opportunities for faculty and others working on applications for sponsored programs; overseeing limited submission grant opportunities, negotiating startup packages to support incoming faculty, providing oversight and support to Centers and Institutes, and developing data tools to assess progress to grant award goals.
Job Duties

East Carolina University (ECU) is committed to supporting and growing extramural research as a part of our strategic plan. As such, the Director of Postdoctoral Affairs, a position within the Office of Research, Economic Development and Engagement’s Office of Research Development plays an important role as most scholars are supported by extramural funds from grants awarded to faculty.
The Director of Postdoctoral Affairs duties are as follows:
  • Serve as Director as part of REDE staff
  • Work with University Program Associate to review postdoctoral scholar appointments and reappointments. CREO will be signatory.
  • Work with the University Program Associate to plan and oversee major events and engagements from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA)
  • Serve as advisor to the ECU Postdoctoral Association (PDA)
  • Be the main ECU contact for postdoctoral affairs including:
    • Annually negotiate health insurance for postdocs and dental residents
    • Review and develop needed rules and regulations contained in the postdoctoral scholar handbook
    • Serve as liaison with the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance for required responsible conduct of research training
    • Review and work with REDE staff to update the OPA website as needed
    • Serve as the contact for National Postdoctoral Association
    • Serve as the REDE contact for faculty in matters of postdoctoral scholar employment, including hiring and termination
    • Carry out strategic planning and annual reporting for ECU Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
    • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
PhD degree and three years of experience as a mentor to PhD students. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Previous leadership experience and postdoc mentoring experience is preferred.
