Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the Division of Academic Affairs. There are 43 faculty members, 44 SHRA and EHRA staff positions, 260 graduate students, 33 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.
Position Summary
The Research Technician will be in the research group of Kenan Distinguished Professor Matthew Redinbo in the Department of Chemistry located in the Genome Sciences Building. The Redinbo Lab is composed of eight graduate students, one research technician, one postdoctoral fellow and one research assistant professor. They study the impact of the commensal microbes on mammalian health and transitions to disease and its treatment. They are funded by the NIH as well as pharmaceutical companies and private foundations like the Helmsley Charitable Trust and the Bay Area Lyme Foundation. A great deal of biochemical data on specific proteins in the microbiome are collected by the laboratory, as well as metagenomics, proteomics and metabolomics data.
The Research Technician will perform Research activities in the categories of Data Collection, Data Analysis and Technology Development. All work will be under the direct supervision of the PI or members of his laboratory who are proven experts in the fields of study. The employee will be required to employ methods and techniques focused on computational and statistical methods that examine data in the form of metabolomics, metagenomics, and proteomics. The position will work with others to assist in computational and statistical approaches. The work product of the employee will be provided to others so that they can use the results in their completion of tasks related to overall projects on-going in the laboratory.
The Research Technician will help to implement, under the guidance of Professor Redinbo, research faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate student, the computer scripts that identify statistically significant correlations between biochemical results and specific microbial proteins from the complexity of the mammalian microbiome. The Research Technician will also perform biochemical assays that have been fully validated by others and for which there are well established standard operating procedures and will be directly supervised while conducting such assays. The Research Technician will be supporting the completion of publication-quality research that will be completed by the PI or members of his laboratory.
