Staff Scientist in the Laboratory of Bioogranic Chemistry

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Bethesda, Maryland


The Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry (LBC), NIDDK, at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is searching for a Staff Scientist to direct the NMR Facility in LBC. The NIH is the world’s largest medical research facility, and the Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry conducts diverse and interdisciplinary research in the chemical sciences. LBC and the NIH are collaborative and exciting research environments located on the main NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.


Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and extensive experience in small molecule NMR spectroscopy and implementation of pulse sequences obtained from a minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral research in the chemical, physical, or biomedical sciences, and/or demonstrated experience in managing an NMR facility using the skills described below.

The duties required for this position include the following:

  • manage and maintain three NMR spectrometers (400, 500 and 600 MHz) and two cryoprobes
  • maintain the computers on all instruments and a backup server
  • complete cryogen fills on a regular basis
  • system administrator for the NMR network limited to LBC
  • train new postdoctoral fellows and students on instrument use
  • design/implement/record complex data sets with little supervision or in collaboration with PIs and trainees
  • manage software licenses for data collection and processing
  • coordinate with Bruker engineers to manage instrument upgrades and repairs
  • advise and collaborate with chemists who are the main users of the spectrometers

Other relevant and desired experience includes running quantum mechanical calculations needed for small molecule structure determination.

Title 42 staff scientist salaries start at $112,000; salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. A full package of Civil Service benefits is available including retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave and savings plan (401 (k) equivalent). Appointments for this position are made as a Staff Scientist and are open to US Citizens and permanent residents. The position is based in Bethesda, Maryland.
