Position Summary:

The Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) at Florida Atlantic University has an opening for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of large-scale simulations of incompressible turbulent flows.

The successful candidate will conduct Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and RANS simulations to understand the fundamental role of turbulent fluctuations in exciting bioluminescence from swimming animals and propelled vehicles in the ocean. The candidate will collaborate closely with an experimental team at HBOI for comparing and validating simulation results against experimental data obtained in the lab and in the field. The candidate will have the opportunity to disseminate new modeling ideas and application results in technical journals and presentations at fluids related conferences and workshops. The candidate will also have the opportunity to incorporate deep learning techniques and other data driven methods into the project.

This position is for two years.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Oceanography, or a
closely related field. Graduate students close to defending their dissertation
and/or current postdocs looking for a new opportunity are both encouraged to
apply. Ph.D. must be completed before date of hire.
• Knowledge of basic turbulence theory
• Experience with turbulence modelling – RANS and/or LES
• Working knowledge of space-/time-discretization schemes, iterative solvers
• Experience with OpenFOAM or equivalent simulation software
• Working knowledge of C++ and software build systems, large-scale parallel
computing using MPI and/or OpenMP.

$55,000-$65,000
