Position description
The laboratory of Dr. Andres Schwingshackl in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care (UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine) is searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to study the role of stretch-activated ion channels in the development of Acute Lung Injury (ALI) and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The candidate should have a strong background and combined interest in ion channel physiology, molecular biology, and in vivo lung injury models.
The project will provide training and mentorship in electrophysiological (patch clamp and fluorometry), genetic, pharmacologic, and immunofluorescence imaging techniques, as well as in vivo and in vitro models of ALI/ARDS. Importantly, for the electrophysiology aspects of this project, our laboratory closely collaborates with Dr. Riccardo Olcese’s group in the Division of Molecular Medicine and Cardiovascular Research (UCLA Department of Anesthesiology). Dr. Olcese will co-supervise the candidate in the electrophysiology aspects of the project, whereas Dr. Schwingshackl will provide primary mentorship for the molecular biology and in vivo lung injury studies. The combined mentorship of a senior electrophysiologist, Dr. Olcese, and a clinician-scientist, Dr. Schwingshackl, maximizes the candidate’s chances for obtaining postdoctoral and ultimately independent research funding.
Applicants should have:
(1) prior experience in electrophysiological methods
(2) a prior first author paper
(3) excellent English oral and writing skills.
Highly motivated PhD and MD/PhD graduates please submit a detailed CV with bibliography and three references to Dr. Schwingshackl (aschwingshackl@mednet.ucla.edu ).
