I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:
GW has everything you need to succeed in discovery. Outstanding research , state-of-the-art facilities and world-class faculty support discovery and innovative solutions. Researchers and faculty across campus advance interdisciplinary and emerging research and scholarship. Our active GW Postdoctoral Association welcomes your engagement in social and professional activities as you join our research teams. Research guides, coding and data management solutions as well as extensive online journals from GW Libraries help to guide your study. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) supports the research infrastructure and facilitates several institutional research initiatives.
This Postdoctoral Associate (Postdoc) will bring broad expertise in research related to increasing diversity in the STEM disciplines and will be supervised by Vice Provost for Research, Dr. Pamela Norris, who is a well-known public voice in this arena. A mechanical engineer herself, prior to joining GW Dr. Norris served as the co-PI of an NSF ADVANCE IT grant at the University of Virginia. The successful candidate will work to promote their own self-identified research agenda related to increasing diversity in STEM and will receive mentored scholarly and research training to enhance their research success skills and prepare for a faculty position at a research institution or for work as a diversity advocate elsewhere.
In addition to working on their own independent scholarship, this Postdoc will serve as the Diversity and Inclusion Manager, for a newly awarded NIST Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) program, a collaboration between the GW and NIST. The GW-PREP Diversity and Inclusion Manager will establish a sustainable program to integrate diversity and inclusion throughout the fabric of GW-PREP to ensure the program is widely viewed as an opportunity by historically marginalized communities. The GW-PREP Diversity and Inclusion Manager will lead outreach activities to groups within GW that are explicitly intended to promote diversity in STEM, such as the School of Engineering and Applied Science’s (SEAS) Center for Women in Engineering (WiE) that serves to foster inclusion broadly and has developed resources for students and faculty; the GW chapter of the National Society for Black Engineers (NBSE); and the SEAS Together Initiative, which seeks to ensure that GW SEAS is a safe, comfortable, and supportive community inclusive of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression for all. This would include working with Women in Engineering (WiE) to establish a presence at recruiting opportunities at conferences such as Grace Hopper, Tapia, SACNAS and NSBE and helping to conduct outreach activities to local area high schools and community colleges. Washington, DC area community colleges are home to a very broad and diverse group of students that GW is eager to promote as their next level of academic studies.
In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduct of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.

  • develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
  • receives financial support in the form of a salary that is typically funded by grants, contracts or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor; and
