Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Archival Research Assistant for the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS). The Archival Research Assistant in early Black print shall have the responsibility of conducting faculty-directed research at special collections and rare book institutions in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides general clerical/office or research support to Faculty Member such as filing, opening mail; word processing; basic bookkeeping, operating basic office equipment, e.g., photocopier, facsimile, multi-line phone/voicemail systems, and basic computer programs.
  • May sort and check out library materials and process books and periodicals.
Position Status Part Time
Hours Per Week 19.5 hours per week
Daily Work Shift Rotating
Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and/or up to 4 years of relevant office, clerical, bookkeeping, library assistant or related experience depending on the duties to be performed.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The position should have college research experience, college coursework and working knowledge of the history of early African American literature, and scheduling flexibility. More specifically, the researcher shall:
  • Be familiar with bibliographic data methods and keep a daily record of primary print sources and findings pertaining to the material life of Phillis Wheatley and the books/poems created under her name
  • Have facility and experience with conducting digital and in-person research into and at the repositories where the documentary sources pertaining to the life and career of Frederick Douglass are located.
  • Keep a narrative log, daily, of research discoveries and constraints as they pertain to the intersections of early Black print culture and Black civic and religious performance culture.

  • No particular physical demands, aside from the ability to sit at a computer and go to the library.

Immunization Requirements
