Outreach Research Assistant

 

Overview:

The Outreach Research Assistant is an essential member of the small team that promotes Benaroya Research Institute’s research among patients, healthcare providers, and community groups throughout the Pacific Northwest; and that recruits participants for registry studies and clinical trials. The person in this role has daily interaction with individuals and healthcare providers via phone calls, emails, virtual meetings, and in-person; and has strong writing and in-person communication skills.

A background or interest in medical science is helpful because you must be able to understand and describe studies in lay language to patients and their family members. The position includes daily administrative tasks such as answering emails and phone calls, data entry, making copies, tracking outreach activities and recruitment numbers, maintaining inventory of recruitment materials and blood draw supplies, and planning and supporting events and outreach programs.

Along with having excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ideal person for this role is a creative self-starter who is good at organizing and can prioritize tasks while working under deadlines. You must be able to work some evenings and weekends and travel occasionally. Finally, the Outreach Research Assistant is passionate about research that aims to improve the lives of people living with autoimmune diseases.

Generally the work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with 30 minute lunch. Includes some evening and weekend hours depending on recruitment activities. Compensation time will be taken for non-standard hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with BRI Marketing & Communications team to research and identify organizations within the Pacific Northwest and our community who may be interested in developing a relationship with BRI.
  • Work with Clinical Manager and Marketing & Communications team to plan and organize research events throughout the Pacific Northwest. This includes attending and coordinating volunteers to assist with recruitment.
  • Assist in working with investigators and providers to create and coordinate educational events within the community.
  • Daily response to phone calls, emails, and online inquiries from individuals and healthcare providers.
  • May prep blood draw supplies and hire phlebotomists for participant screening events, attend events and manage the queue for blood draws, bring samples back to the lab and process for shipment.
  • Track and register for conferences and events throughout the Pacific Northwest, virtually and in-person, and staff exhibitor tables at these events.
  • Promote autoimmunity research studies to patients and providers via email and print mailings. Use tracking tools such as Constant Contact to manage and curate email lists of participants and healthcare providers.
  • Closely track interactions with providers, community groups and potential participants using spreadsheets and database.
  • Help create and distribute print and digital communications, including newsletters, brochures, social media posts and web pages.
  • General administrative tasks to support the department supervisor and goals.
  • Must maintain subject and document confidentiality at all times, understand and comply with appropriate protocols and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a high school diploma; associate’s or bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • The ideal candidate is passionate about autoimmunity research, is interested in medical science and has the ability to explain scientific concepts to a lay audience.
  • Previous work experience in recruitment and/or marketing is helpful.
  • Requires strong listening and interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to interact with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, including children and those with intellectual disability, such as Down Syndrome.
  • Strong organizational skills and conscientious attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Graphic design and simple video production skills are helpful but not required.
  • Will need to work an additional six to ten evenings and weekends per year, promoting studies and screening research participants locally. There may be occasional overnight travel to research events and conferences in the Pacific Northwest.

Compensation:

$20.00 to $27.74 per hour
