Merced College is a midsized community college located in California's Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. Our tree-shaded, growing community of just over 80,000 includes multiple biking and walking trails as well as access to several lakes – large and small – throughout the county.

Merced College is looking for an equity-minded, innovative and dynamic leader to serve as Director of the Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (DHSI) grant. The Director over the DHSI grant will oversee and manage the grant, as well as develop and lead a talented team working towards developing equity and inclusion efforts, expanding enrollment opportunities in our community, and improve the student experiences at Merced College.

General Description:

This is a classified administrator position. Under the direction of the Dean of Student Services, the incumbent will work with various success teams to implement Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The Director will also be responsible for designing streamlined and integrated DEI training and accountability systems.

Examples of Duties

Representative Duties:

 

  • Coordinate all elements of the DHSI grant
  • Responsible for budget management
  • Responsible for grant implementation and grant requirements
  • Coordinate with student success teams to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and services to students
  • Schedule and conduct staff activities on DEI best practices
  • Continuous DEI monitoring and accountability among Success Teams to ensure that all students have full access to educational and personal supports
  • Expansion and integration of the College and Career Access Pathway (CCAP) for first generation Hispanic college students
  • Develop and supervise outreach and recruitment programs designed to increase the number of disproportionately impacted students at Merced College, particularly Hispanic students
  • Provide leadership, advice, and counsel to disproportionately impacted populations and Hispanic students
  • Develop innovative and dynamic methods to help improve student retention and success among Hispanic student populations
  • Compile necessary data to identify and create engagement opportunities and access/success initiatives for Hispanic students
  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to gather data and generate analysis for reporting
  • Make presentations about the DHSI grant and related activities to off-and on-campus groups
  • Assist in the formation of professional development activities needed to advance the goals of the center
  • Be sensitive to and understand the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
  • Recruit and supervise student workers
  • Assist with other student support services and programs
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Educational needs of those with economic, educational, and other needs that hinder success in higher education
Financial aid policies, procedures, and practices
Counseling and advisement techniques
Challenges and barriers faced by disproportionately impacted populations and students of color in higher education


Ability to:

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Supervise and train staff
Work cooperatively with instructors and staff
Interpret and apply federal and state regulations and policies
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students


Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Education/Training/Experience:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in any discipline AND one year of reasonably related experience
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students


License or Certificate: A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date. Travel to locations throughout the District may be required.
