Responsibilities:
  • To participate and coordinate outreach activities that include making presentations to non-profit organizations, government agencies, probation/parole staff and agencies, and schools.
  • To conduct program orientation and intake, reviewing all elements of the program including expectations, requirements, and credentialing career options.
  • To conduct individual needs assessment with regard to basic needs such as housing and food; educational level and school enrollment; ability to access digital platforms; current income; employment and past work experience; eligibility for Independent Living Program services through foster care system; gang affiliation; and involvement with the justice system.
  • To build relationships with community-based organizations and government agencies to promote collaboration, problem solve, and identify resources for youth.
  • To develop an Individual Service Plan which identifies barriers to employment and action steps to address the barriers.
  • To assist with the facilitation of the program’s employment readiness, leadership, and life skills workshops.
  • To track youth participation in each program component (educational, construction, counseling, leadership development, employment readiness, and life skills).
  • To track youth attendance, ensuring follow-up when absent.
  • To work with youth who exhibit ongoing attendance issues.
  • To meet with the youth on an individual basis weekly, to monitor progress in each program component; identify resources to meet supportive needs such as tutoring or counseling; problem solve; review Individual Service Plan and modify as needed.
  • To maintain each youth’s file with the appropriate documentation.
  • To work collaboratively with the Employment Specialist to maintain contact with the youth monthly and during follow-up phase.
  • To accomplish all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested for successful completion of the mission of Goodwill Industries of the Valley and YouthBuild Roanoke.
  • To report to the Youth Build Roanoke Program Manager.

 

Qualifications:

  • Be a strong advocate to young people; respect the ideas and intelligence of young adults and a strong commitment to supporting young people succeed in an innovative training program, to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills, and enable them to make a difference in their community.
  • Demonstrated dependability, maturity, and initiative.
  • Ability to handle crisis situations with a minimum of supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to maintain program/guest confidentiality and treat each individual with dignity and respect.
  • Ability to set and observe appropriate personal limits and boundaries.
  • Flexibility to deal effectively with a variety of people, situations, problems, and changes.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or one to two years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with youth preferred.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematic equations.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking of a wide range of practical problems.
 
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • The ability to provide proof of insurance is required to drive personal vehicle on company business.
  • An acceptable motor vehicle record based upon Goodwill Industries of the Valleys guidelines is require to drive a company vehicle or transport youth participants.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the following in-house trainings within the first 90-days of employment:
    • CPR
    • First Aid
    • Human Rights Training
    • Mandated Reporting
