Departmental Overview
The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) is one of UC Berkeley's largest academic departments and is by several measures (including number of the faculty and students, budget, and assigned square feet), larger than many UCB colleges and schools. MCB is divided into five divisions: Biochemistry, Biophysics & Structural Biology (BBS); Cell & Developmental Biology (CDB); Genetics, Genomics & Development (GGD); Immunology & Pathogenesis (I&P); and Neurobiology (NEU). The teaching and research activities of the Department of MCB concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms.
The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology seeks a collaborative and creative Assistant Director of Equity, Inclusion & Belonging. The Assistant Director primarily provides support for organization and implementation in matters related to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice ('DEIBJ'). The Assistant Director will serve as a liaison and catalyst for change as we instill the campus's values of DEIBJ into each departmental activity and initiative. The Assistant Director will work in a collaborative manner with others across the organization to implement programming and initiatives that increase interaction between students, staff, and faculty that aim to improve departmental climate. They meet with faculty, students, postdoctoral fellow, and other stakeholder groups to build support and engagement in DEI programs.
The Assistant Director will be responsible for organizing departmental symposia and meetings that provide professional development with a DEIBJ focus, as well as activities that build community and improve climate. The incumbent will prepare DEI statistical reports, assist with fundraising, and act as a liaison between the Equity Committee, faculty, trainees and students. As a member of the Equity Committee, the incumbent will interact closely with Equity Committee members, Departmental leadership, and graduate students. The incumbent will coordinate DEIBJ efforts within the life sciences and across other campus DEIBJ organizations.

Responsibilities

  • In consultation with the Department Equity Advisor, implements effective diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIBJ) standards, training, and programs.
  • Organizes and implements DEIJB events (e.g., symposia, affinity groups, anti-racist workshops, regular trainings), and advertises widely for life sciences audiences.
  • Manages the generation and analysis of survey and other data related to DEIJB initiatives.
  • Compiles and reviews diversity, equity and inclusion statistical reports to internal and external agencies.
  • Using professional diversity, equity and inclusion/accesibility concepts, monitors, makes recommendations on the organization's efforts to ensure compliance with government legislation and organization diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
  • In collaboration with the Equity Committee, formulates SMART goals and strategies to advance DEIBJ and foster a clture of belonging within the Life Sciences.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for faculty, trainees and staff encountering negative consequences from the attitudes or behaviors of others in the classroom, lab or office.
  • Addresses and resolves a range of diversity, equity and inclusion-related issues.
  • When necessary, advises on the necessary escalation of issues to senior department or campus leadership and or support offices.
  • Assists with applications for funding from multiple external sources (foundations, individuals, federal funding agencies).
  • Partners with DEIJB stakeholders across the Department, Division, and College.
  • Works in a collaborative manner to ensure best practices and programming adopted as widely as possible. Acts as a changemaker to embed DEIJB into department culture.

Required Qualifications
  • Has thorough knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion and accessibility programs and can apply more advanced subject matter knowledge in the completion of diversity, equity and inclusion assignments.
  • Possesses in-depth skills to gather, organize and perform analyses on diversity, equity and inclusion and accessibility programs and initiatives as well as presenting findings and making recommendations clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Possesses excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Has thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures; knowledge of functional area and understands how work may impact other areas.
  • Ability to translate data into understandable language and visual displays.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to influence, both verbally and in writing.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $75,000.00 - $85,000.00.
  • This is a one-year, full-time (40 hours/week), Contract (temporary) position and eligible for full UC benefits. This position is may be eligible for extension, contingent on performance and departmental budget.
  • This is an exempt, monthly paid position.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for 50% remote capability.
