This position will work with the Lever Lab which conducts research in biogeochemistry, microbiology, and ecology related to the short- and long-term carbon cycle in marine sediments.

Position located in Port Aransas, Texas. Only applicants authorized to work in the United States will be considered.


Responsibilities

  • Help plan and execute sediment coring campaigns in Texas intracoastal waters.

  • Analyze concentrations and isotopic compositions of dissolved and particulate chemical species using diverse methods (colorimetry, gas chromatography, ion chromatography, isotope ratio mass spectrometry).

  • Extract sedimentary nucleic acids and analyze by diverse methods (spectrofluorometry, realtime-PCR, amplicon sequencing by Illumina or Nanopore technology).

  • Help train new lab members at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral level.

  • Help organize and manage a small research lab.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in marine, biological, geological, or environmental science, or a closely related field.

  • Interest in elemental cycles, microbial processes, and/or how ecosystems function.

  • Strong organizational and computer skills (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Ability to work in a team of researchers with diverse backgrounds.

  • Basic swimming skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic skills in R or other programming language(s) (e.g. Matlab, Python, Linux).

  • Past experience in geochemical or microbiological techniques and analytical methods (including bioinformatics or statistics).

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).


Salary Range

$31,200+ annually
