Job Description Summary
The Department of Biosystems Engineering (www.eng.auburn.edu/bsen ) in the College of Agriculture at Auburn University is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Biomaterials and Biofuels Engineering. This faculty position is a nine-month, tenure-track position with 60% research and 40% teaching appointment. The projected start date is September 1, 2023.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a nationally recognized research program that is focused on biomaterials and biofuels engineering with special focus on development of biomass-based conventional and renewable plastics, bio-lubricants, bioremediation and enhanced oil recovery, and bulk biological solids handling and processing. The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funding to support his/her research program and summer salary from external sources such as USDA, NSF, DOE, and other related federal sponsors, and from relevant industries in Alabama and across the country. The successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate effectively with biosystems engineering faculty, and with Auburn University colleagues who conduct research in the broad field of value addition to biological materials. Instructional responsibilities will include existing undergraduate and graduate level bioprocessing and biofuels related courses, as well as developing new courses. In addition, the successful candidate will mentor students in the department; and actively participate in graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research to completion; produce scholarship through recognized peer-reviewed outlets; provide leadership to the biosystems engineering profession through state, regional, and national professional society participation; and serve, when appropriate, on departmental, college and university committees.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in biosystems, biological, agricultural, or closely related engineering disciplines by the expected position start date. Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative work in Biomaterials and Biofuels Engineering is required. Candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues across disciplines. The successful candidate must possess excellent written and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences. The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Desirable qualifications include: research and teaching experiences in biomaterials and biofuels engineering, postdoctoral and/or industry experience; experience in securing extramural funds from competitive sources; and professional engineering registration or the ability to pursue licensure as a Professional Engineer.
