Address Tucson, AZ USA
Position Highlights The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering is seeking qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Associate position. The postdoctoral associate will work with Dr. Eric Butcher on the Department of Defense (DoD) funded project "Nonlinear Oscillator Synchronization and Multi-Agent Consensus on Compact Manifolds with Novel Feedback Coupling and Complex Network Optimization". The project targets cross-disciplinary research in the areas of multi-agent consensus control on compact manifolds, periodic and chaotic oscillator synchronization and stabilization, and complex network optimization.

Topical areas relevant to the DoD's research interests include complex networks, nonlinear and complex dynamics, oscillator synchronization, and multi-agent network control. The project emphasizes the use of analytical methods and includes the incorporation of novel strategies for feedback coupling, the investigation of new dynamical phenomena, and the use of new tools for the optimization of communication networks.

The successful candidate should be familiar with at least two of the following topics: multi-agent consensus control, dynamics on compact manifolds, rigid body attitude dynamics, nonlinear and chaotic oscillator synchronization, and complex networks. An ideal candidate would have a strong record of publishing scholarly research and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work to blend a graph-theoretic theory of nonlinear oscillator synchronization based on the Master Stability Function with a globally valid group-theoretic theory of multi-vehicle systems attitude/pose consensus control on compact manifolds.
  • Investigate the dynamical phenomena of orbital and cluster consensus and balancing on compact manifolds and their extension to periodic and chaotic oscillator synchronization.
  • Utilize strategies in feedback control theory of fractional-order and/or time-periodic feedback coupling, with or without time delay, for improving metrics for consensus and synchronization.
  • Utilize the techniques developed in the above duties to investigate applications of interest to the DoD.
  • Lead the preparation of annual reports to the DoD.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph. D. in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or other closely related discipline upon hire.
