Job Description

This Postdoctoral Fellow position is in the organometallic chemistry research group led by Dr. Malkanthi Karunananda in the Department of Chemistry (Department of Chemistry : SLU). The successful applicant will develop transition-metal-based catalytic systems for applications in polymer upcycling and photocatalytic organic transformations. Additional work duties include design of new molecules, data analysis, analytical characterization, purification, maintaining lab equipment, and mentoring/training graduate and undergraduate student researchers.

Required qualifications: Ph.D. in inorganic, organometallic or organic chemistry or a Ph.D. in a related field with at least two years of experience in a synthetic inorganic, organometallic or organic chemistry laboratory setting.

Preferred qualifications & personal qualities:

• Experience with synthesis of organic & organometallic compounds

• Experience in handling air-sensitive organometallic compounds using Schlenk line & Glove box techniques

• Experience with standard structural characterization and analytical techniques such as NMR, IR, UV-Vis, LC-MS, GC-MS

• Experience with purification & crystallization of organic/organometallic compounds

• A background in photochemistry is a plus, but, not essential

• Self-motivated personality with an independent, target-oriented and systematic working style

• A high degree of creativity and excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities include:

• Design and execute organometallic syntheses and test target catalytic applications

• Keep meticulous records in laboratory notebook and online data management systems

• Write technical reports of experimental data for manuscripts

• Conduct literature searches related to research project

• Assist in the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students

• Comply with University & Department safety policies

• Maintain supplies, instrumentation, and other lab duties as assigned
