Job Summary:

The Department of Pharmacology is seeking applicants for a part-time or full-time Instructor to carry out cutting-edge Down syndrome research in the laboratory of Dr. Joaquin Espinosa, with the ultimate goal of significantly improving the quality of life of individuals living with trisomy 21.

Key Responsibilities:

  •       Design and carry-out robust statistical analyses. Provide guidance and support to other team members in data management and analysis.
  •       Lead, as well as support, writing of manuscripts, abstracts, reports, and other publications.
  •       Contribute to the development of grant/contract proposals, study designs and execution of those study designs.
  •       Develop research protocols, including compliance with ethical guidelines for human and animal research
  •       Present results at local, national and international conferences

Research projects will be geared towards understanding the degree to which Down syndrome can be understood as an interferonopathy, with the ultimate goal of significantly improving the quality of life for individuals living with Trisomy 21. The position requires extensive experience in murine models of Down syndrome, techniques to evaluate primary human immune cells, and a deep knowledge of  immunology in general. The successful candidate will have a PhD in immunology or a related field, relevant laboratory experience, and an exceptional scientific research record. The Instructor will join a multidisciplinary team in a highly collaborative environment trying to understand aberrant interferon signaling in the context of Down syndrome and other biology involved in the many aspects of a dysfunctional immune response, including the following: assay design, assay optimization, data analysis and follow-up studies. The candidate must have experience in training and supervising junior personnel and applying for NIH grants. The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, an independent and critical thinker, a meticulous experimentalist, a team player and able to multitask in an interactive setting. In addition, the individual will keep accurate and complete records of all scientific experiments. They will draft technical reports and manuscripts and present work as needed.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

•   Ph.D. in Immunology or related field.

•   Minimum of 5 years of related experience.

•   Experience in molecular biology techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

•   Experience in Down syndrome research.

•   Demonstrated ability to learn, operate troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment and multi-task effectively in the laboratory.

•   A demonstrated proclivity towards improving processes and delivering practical solution.

•   Expertise using mouse models to characterize the systemic impacts of aberrant cytokine signaling.

•   Ability to design and executive complementary cell-based assays using primary human immune cells.

  • Proficiency in both flow- and mass-cytometry, as well as analysis of resultant data

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•     Ability to communicate effectively, both to colleagues and to the general public.

•     Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

•     Ability to train, supervise, and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral scientists.

•     Ability to assemble, revise, and successfully publish scientific manuscripts.

•     Ability to present scientific findings at meetings and conferences.

•     Ability to design and write funding applications.

•     Ability to establish and maintain productive scientific collaborations.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$80,000 - $82,000 

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
