Summary

The University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research (ISR) (http://www.isr.umich.edu), in coordination with Advanced Research Computing (ARC) (https://arc.umich.edu/), seeks a Program Manager to provide management and coordination for data science initiatives in the social sciences, and support for research activities in this area. This full-time position will be located at Ann Arbor, Michigan within the Institute for Social Research. ISR offers an innovative and friendly working environment with a focus on professional development and maximizing employee potential. Compensation is expected to be in the range of $80,000 - $105,000 annually, depending on education and experience. It will include the University of Michigan staff fringe benefits package.

Responsibilities*

The position, which will largely be on-site, will involve building and adding to the existing initiatives around data science in ISR and working with the ARC Scientific Computing and Research Consulting Services team. This work is complementary, and includes organizing and running CoderSpaces a drop-in office hours with data science and scientific computing experts; developing trainings, workshops, speaker series, and other events aimed at social science faculty and graduate students; connect faculty with data science resources at the university; assist with the development of technical support documentation for accessing scientific computing; maintain the Data Science Portal at ISR; assist faculty in proposals and raising funding for new research initiatives; and coordinate and support additional research activities on new and existing projects.  

 

The position will also be responsible for project management, including detailing scope and requirements, problem-solving, reporting on progress, disseminating results, adhering to sponsor requirements and expectations, and meeting deadlines. The selected candidate will partner with data science personnel and organizations both within and external to the University of Michigan. This includes participation in strategic planning; defining and implementing organization-wide resources; and overseeing communication, websites, social media, and conveying the value and importance of data science to the broader public.


The successful candidate will be self-motivated, have the ability to multi-task and juggle multiple projects effectively, be able to initiate and drive projects with minimal guidance, and be effective in collaborating with teams of individuals with diverse backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and experience. The candidate will also be intellectually curious and able to describe complicated research, technology, and techniques in a way that is accessible to a general audience. The candidate will have strong empirical and quantitative analysis skills, as well as the ability to communicate the results of analysis both statistically and through visualizations. Last, the candidate will be savvy with technology and able to discuss, understand and make decisions about complex technical and logistical issues.

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum qualifications include a Master's Degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, social science, epidemiology, engineering, or other relevant quantitative field with some coursework in data science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Those with PhDs are encouraged to apply.  Knowledge of and experience with data science tools and techniques.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: big data analytics, machine learning, large datasets, and/or distributed computing (Hive, Spark, Hadoop).
  • Knowledge of and interest in the social sciences.
  • Familiarity with computing and data storage environments in a large organization such as a university.  
  • Project and program management experience, including the management of multiple projects at one time.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring other team members both formally and informally. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
