Work Experience
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in accounting, finance, or related operations; including financial and operations management experience
- Minimum three (3) years in non-profit financial management
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or demonstrated equivalent in education and experience
- Preference is given to higher education experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have strong nonprofit financial management background and understand the rules and strategies related to a 501c3 with respect to accounting, audits, tax returns, and 990’s.
- Knowledge of IRS charitable fundraising regulations and GAAP, and the ability to ensure compliance.
- Must be proficient in donor accounting software (such as Araize, Financial Edge, Sage, or others) and MS Office Suite.
- Experience in planning and budgeting at the organizational level, preferably with the Foundation of a community college or higher education institution.
- Proficient in accounting, statistical analysis, revenue forecasting, financial modeling, project coordination, and project management.
- A track record in grants management.
- Preferred experience with board leadership and board finance committees.
- Ability to communicate in a diplomatic, friendly, and effective manner with college and Foundation employees, senior-level administrators, grant program directors, and fund program directors.
- Ability to initiate, plan, organize, and bring projects to conclusion and work within deadlines, without direct supervision.
Essential Functions
The Director of Finance will be a member of the senior leadership team at the Durham Tech Foundation and a partner in strategic decision-making and operations. The Director of Finance is responsible for the internal controls and operational efficiencies of the Foundation, including finance, budgeting, purchasing, and auditing.
Job Duties
- Manages accounting systems and performs all financial management for the Foundation, and the Foundation’s for-profit LLC subsidiary; Foundation assets currently valued at $13M.
- Manages Foundation accounting functions including journal entries, bank reconciliations, monthly closing process, accounts receivable/payable, account coding, backup, and the approval of all invoices, check requests, and credit card purchases.
- Ensures the daily operations/functions of Foundation finances are efficient, accurate, and timely; reviews and maintains financial data and systems for integrity and fiscal responsibility.
- Supervises all activities relating to Foundation payables and receivables; coordinates the request/purchase of equipment, supplies, and other donor-funded expenses in collaboration with the divisions and departments of the college and the business office; monitors expenditures to ensure that budget limits are maintained.
- Coordinates the development and maintenance of policies, regulations, and procedures as they relate to accounting and fiscal responsibility such as gift acceptance, spending, endowment fund management, investment, etc.
- Establishes and performs banking relations and transactions, maintains banking relationships, and monitors cash balances.
- Facilitates and approves financial transactions including requisitions, purchase orders, and journal entries.
- Reviews procurement cards for compliance issues, monitor, and reconcile general operational expenditures.
- Maintains legal and insurance documentation on non-cash assets for Foundation and LLC.; reviews and maintains contracts, licenses, permits, and insurance.
- Develops and monitors annual operating budget and year-end financial close; compiles the information needed to complete the financial reports for fiscal year-end.
- Ensures compliance with state and federal non-profit regulations as well as reporting and yearly tax/information filings, both in regard to fiscal and program operations; ensures controls are in place to protect and safeguard the financial assets of the organization.
- Facilitates and works with the auditor and Foundation Treasurer on internal and external audits; ensures establishment, monitoring, and oversight of proper internal controls and adherence to colleges policy and procedures; ensures accurate and timely filing of yearly audit and 990 Form.
- Participates in key decisions pertaining to operating model, strategic directions, and operational execution; makes actionable recommendations to the executive director on overall strategy, budget, and financial operations and oversight.
- Participates in program planning and evaluation of Foundation operations; provides financial information and projections for the development of new projects and programs; provides budget analysis on existing projects and programs.
- Provides financial reports for the executive director, Foundation Treasurer, Foundation board, and finance committees on a regular basis; assists program staff with budget development and fund management; regularly provides program staff with budget reports for tracking and reconciliation.
- Works closely with Foundation development staff to track and report on fundraising efforts; prepares reports for donors as needed; assists with fundraising proposal/grant budget development, tracking, and reconciliation.
- Serves as the primary liaison and manager of all Foundation finance and investment contracts, such as audit, investing, and banking, and other related contracted services in coordination with the Foundation Treasurer.
- Provides varying degrees of management and support in administrative affairs, and performs other job-related duties as assigned in support of the Foundation and college’s goals and core values.

Required Working Hours
