Summary

The Michigan Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides outstanding, state-of-the-art, evidence-based care for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. As well, our faculty, staff, and trainees conduct a diverse range of musculoskeletal research and scholarship. The department?s research program is integral to its mission and vision of leading advances in musculoskeletal health, through excellence and innovative care, scientific discovery, and dedicated teaching.

Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is conducted by a diverse group of faculty, staff and trainees with expertise in biology, engineering, epidemiology, health outcomes and healthcare. The collaborative research programs are focused on improving treatment or preventing musculoskeletal disorders and disease. The research enterprise is funded by a variety of sources, including, but not limited to, the NIH, DoD, NSF, industry, and professional societies. Primary basic science research operations are located at the Biomedical Science Research Building, with additional clinical research sites. Currently there are extensive shared core resources and a team of core research staff.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary research team as a laboratory staff member to coordinate day-to-day lab operations, support scientific studies by managing regulatory processes and ordering reagents and supplies, perform sample processing (e.g., for submission to histology or molecular Cores), and assist with hands-on laboratory experiments, particularly histological processing and analysis. The work will involve valuable contributions, including scientific publication co-authorship, to multiple large, federally funded research projects.

We are looking for a team-oriented, self-motivated individual with an interest in laboratory science to remain as a long-term team member. Responsibilities*

  • Supervise undergraduate students and their laboratory schedules. 
  • Manage regulatory protocols, including IACUC and IBC.
  • Assist and coordinate the scheduling and execution of laboratory experiments, working closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other staff members.  
  • Perform and coordinate sample processing, including histological processing, submission of samples to various on-campus cores, and in-lab processing.
  • Attend weekly lab meetings, project meetings, and on-demand meetings with the supervising faculty
  • Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills (i.e., email, Zoom, Slack, etc)
  • Approach duties with a strong sense of collaboration and collegiality to facilitate the scientific progress and career development of laboratory trainees, namely graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Required Qualifications*

  • B.S. in Biology, Engineering, Data Science, or related fields applicable to biomedical science.
  • 4-5 years of experience (Intermediate level) or 1-3 years of experience (Associate level) in a research laboratory (in any capacity), i.e., basic wet lab skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Willingness to learn and quickly adopt new tools and systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Confident teaching and mentoring abilities (relevant to undergraduate student supervision)
  • Strong emphasis on safety, SOPs, and regulatory upkeep.

Desired Qualifications*

  • M.S. or PhD. in Biology, Engineering, Data Science, or related fields applicable to biomedical science.
  • 5+ years of experience in research laboratory 
  • Experience with histological processing, staining, and analysis
  • Experience with molecular biology and tissue/cell culture.  
  • Experience with supervision of undergraduate and/or graduate students
  • Experience in working in a laboratory or department focused on musculoskeletal science, immunology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or related fields

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Additional Information

This is a term-limited position with funding for one year. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits.  This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
