Summary

The Department of Pathology is seeking an experienced biologist to serve as a lab manager and research assistant for the laboratory of Dr. Russell Ryan, MD. In addition to general lab management responsibilities, the successful applicant will assist in projects related to functional genomics and transcriptional regulation in lymphoid malignancies. The Ryan Lab utilizes cutting-edge tools for the genome-wide analysis of enhancer function and regulation in normal and malignant lymphocytes.

Responsibilities*

Biological research assistant duties (70% of time) may include:

  • Mammalian cell culture
  • Basic molecular biology techniques (plasmid preparation, cloning, mutagenesis)
  • Maintaining mouse colonies (patient-derived leukemia mouse models)
  • Lentivirus production and use for genetic manipulation of cell lines
  • Targeted genome editing or manipulation (CRISPR-Cas9 system)
  • Chromatin immunoprecipitation of histone marks and transcription factors (ChIP-Seq)
  • Next-generation sequencing library preparation and data production
  • Retrieving and processing human lymphoma samples from tissue or blood
  • Data analysis and presentation.

Lab manager duties (30% of time) will include:

  • Ordering, organizing and inventorying research equipment and materials
  • Scientific and administrative record-keeping
  • Personnel on-boarding and off-boarding

All work and data must be meticulously recorded and organized

Required Qualifications*

  •          The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual interested in a career in biological research or medicine
  •          Technically meticulous when conducting experiments
  •          Highly organized in record-keeping
  •          Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  •          Independent, intellectually passionate and able to display scientific initiative
  •          BA or BS, with a concentration in the biological sciences
  •       One to three years of research laboratory experience

Desired Qualifications*

  • Masters degree in the biological sciences 
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques
  • Experience with data analysis in Prism, Flowjo, and / or vector sequence manipulation in SnapGene
  • Experience in computational data analysis (Linux, Python, R) is preferred

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
