The Department of Behavioral, Social, and Health Education Sciences (BSHES) at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) is seeking an Assistant Research Professor (non-tenure track). The BSHES department’s public health training and research priorities follow a social ecological framework, viewing health outcomes as resulting from a complex interplay of factors operating at multiple levels. BSHES faculty use innovative pedagogies to train future leaders in public health with competencies that span individual, interpersonal, community, and societal levels of influence.

 

The Assistant Research Professor position will be supported by the Emory Centers for Public Health Training and Technical Assistance (Emory Centers) which seeks to advance the practice of public health through capacity building in partnership with the public health workforces and communities nationwide.  Emory Centers provides capacity building, training and technical assistance, professional and organizational development, planning and evaluation services to governmental and non-governmental health professionals, organizations and communities at the local, state, national and international levels. The ideal new member to our faculty will provide leadership for conceptualizing a program of research in the implementation, adaptation, and scaling of public health interventions and practices, as well as leading workforce development projects across all 4 nationwide subcenters TTAC (professional development of the public health workforce), DTTAC (diabetes prevention), EnCORE (organizational capacity building and health equity primarily for HIV/AIDS), PEQI (program evaluation and quality improvement). In particular, the ideal new member to our faculty will have specialized experience in implementation research, and adaptation and scaling of the National Diabetes Prevention Program to priority populations at greatest risk for diabetes, and in planning and evaluation of complex, multiorganization, multi state and nationwide health initiatives to include but not limited to Alzheimer’s Disease.  This position will also be responsible for developing a Grants Development Core for Emory Centers that builds the capacity of the Center to seek and attain continuous funding. Further, we strive to communicate and disseminate funded work to academic and practitioner communities that we serve.

The ideal new member to our faculty will have expertise in implementation science and implementation practice, program planning and evaluation; curriculum development and training, consultative selling to customers and project scoping and contracting, applying advanced statistical or qualitative data analytic techniques; dissemination of products and research through a variety of mediums and to diverse audiences; grant and manuscript preparation; student and staff supervision and mentorship; professional engagement and development of the public health workforce nationwide. Applicants with a PhD, DrPH or equivalent degree in public health or related disciplines (e.g., sociology, communications, education, public policy, behavioral economics) and at least one year of postdoctoral professional experience are preferred.

BSHES comprises 32 primary and over 50 adjunct faculty, many of whom are affiliated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Cancer Society (ACS), and Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH). Our faculty has global research reputations in community-engaged research, diabetes prevention, cancer prevention and control, mental health, substance misuse, HIV prevention, and macro-social determinants of health. Our faculty collaborate with other departments in RSPH, the School of Medicine, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Allied Health, Emory College of Arts and Sciences, and Winship Cancer Institute. The department matriculates an average of 100 MPH students per year and has a well-supported PhD program (sph.emory.edu/bshe s). 

 

The desired start date for this position is September 1, 2023, or earlier.  This is a three-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal pending funded teaching and research opportunities. The selected faculty member may devote up to 100% of effort to Emory Centers for Public Health Training and Technical Assistance research translation, implementation practice, administration, and mentorship/supervision in the first year of the role and contribute to departmental teaching by year two or three.
