Job Description

The Director of Residential Life for Recruitment, Hiring, and Retention reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Residential Life (AVP-RL) and serves as a member of the Residential Life leadership team. Charged with the integrated formation of exempt staff, this position supervises and supports the work of eight undergraduate residence hall rectors and functions in a tiered, emergency on-call rotation. As a distinctive member of the Residential Life leadership team, the Director oversees a functional area of expertise aimed at recruitment, hiring, and retention of professional staff. Ultimately, the Director assists the AVP-RL by increasing the flow of information and communication with rectors and by collaborating with University partners to promote the building of Christian communities in keeping with Notre Dame’s Catholic, Holy Cross tradition.

Essential Duties:

Rector Supervision:
  • Supports the work of eight undergraduate residence hall rectors in their primary roles of pastoral leader, chief administrator, community builder, and University resource
  • Provides direction and accountability regarding consistent implementation of standard operating procedures for the sake of student safety and security
  • Acts as a resource and consultant for rectors mediating conflict resolution; enforcing community standards; addressing Hall Staff personnel issues; vetting student cases, student crises and high- risk students of concern; and managing communication with internal and external constituents, including faculty, staff, parents, and families
  • Collaborates with the Residential Life leadership team to calibrate performance, provide feedback and coaching, and devise performance improvement plans when necessary
  • Consults with the Residential Life leadership team regarding best practices for rector supervision

Recruitment, Hiring and Retention:
  • Assists the AVP-RL to design and implement a comprehensive strategic vision for Residential Life recruitment, hiring, and retention in order to fill the pipeline with diverse candidates, develop innovative hiring strategies, and ensure talent retention
  • Identifies best practices for recruitment, hiring, and retention of diverse candidates and serves as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion within Residential Life
  • Builds relationships, both internal and external, including through targeted strategic travel, to cultivate the core pipeline for recruitment
  • Collaborates closely with hiring managers in Residential Life as well as partners in Student Affairs, Human Resources, and General Counsel to anticipate personnel needs, advertise vacancies, and manage searches consistent with the University’s best practices
  • Oversees all facets of the hiring process, including: screening and stewarding candidates; building search itineraries; managing logistics; soliciting and compiling feedback; conducting reference checks; and onboarding successful candidates
  • Assesses perennial obstacles to talent retention and develops innovative incentives for retention of professional staff in Residential Life 
  • Tracks Residential Life progress on strategic goals aimed at increasing diverse representation among professional staff and makes recommendations for adapting best practices to increase representation of paraprofessional staff, namely student hall staff (RAs & ARs)
  • Benchmarks best practices on an ongoing basis and regularly reviews internal policies, practices, and standard operating procedures for recruitment, hiring, and retention to ensure Residential Life consistently meets and exceeds expectations 
  • Showcases Residential Life on a regional and national level to distinguish Notre Dame as flagship institution with an innovative approach to recruitment, hiring, and retention


Residential Life Leadership Team:
  • Assists the AVP-RL by increasing the flow of information and communication between rectors and the AVP-RL; between rectors and the housing operations team; and between rectors and campus partners internal and external to the division of Student Affairs
  • Collaborates with the AVP-RL and the leadership team to establish standard operating procedures and identify best practices for Residential Life
  • Serves in a tiered, emergency on-call system for the Division of Student Affairs responsible for responding to student emergencies and supporting and advising Hall Staff in crisis situations



Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIRED
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Theology, Pastoral Ministry or a related field

EXPERIENCE / SKILLS REQUIRED
  • At least three years of experience in a related field, including supervisory responsibility for professional or paraprofessional staff
  • Understanding of the identity, mission, and values of institutions of Catholic higher education
  • Entrepreneurial spirit who actively seeks out change and embraces critical questioning, innovation and continuous improvement
  • Effective interpersonal skills including a demonstrated commitment to diversity and to creating a welcoming environment for all people
  • Demonstrated experience working in the areas of training and development
  • Knowledge of student life issues with a proven track record managing student crises and mediating conflict resolution
  • Evidence of an ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, parents, and students
  • Ability to design, coordinate, implement and evaluate programs with and for students
  • Ability to manage complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long- term projects with urgent or immediate demand
  • Capacity to manage stress and maintain personal and emotional stability in a demanding work environment
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with a facility for public speaking
  • Strong organizational skills, with a demonstrated attention to detail
  • Competent with technology (Google and MS Office Suite) and ability to learn new systems

Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE / SKILLS PREFERRED
  • Seven or more years of experience in a related field such as higher education, student personnel, non-profit administration, counseling, or pastoral ministry
  • At least five years of experience serving as a direct supervisor with a demonstrated ability for leadership and supervision of professional staff
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Congregation of Holy Cross and the Holy Cross charism and deep commitment to the order’s identity, mission, and values
