Postdoctoral Positions for Eureka Scientific, BASS Program

Job Description

The Swift BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS, www.bass-survey.com ) is an all-sky multiwavelength study of the nearest and most powerful hard X-ray selected AGN carried out by 50+ world-class international scientists. We are seeking to hire 1-2 enthusiastic postdoc or research scientists to work with Dr. Mike Koss. The position will be administered through Eureka Scientific and conducted fully remotely, and is limited to either US citizens or those who already hold a valid work permit that reside in the USA. Part time appointments will be considered in exceptional circumstances.

The successful candidate(s) will be expected to lead projects related to already approved space-based programs with Swift, Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST, targeting nearby X-ray selected AGN (see https://www.bass-survey.com/proposals.html ). Some of the major projects include studying X-ray variability on 15 year timescales, a large HST UV/Swift/ground based observations of type 1 AGN SEDs, XMM/NuSTAR observations of luminous obscured Swift BAT quasars, variability among Compton-thick AGN, and Chandra observations of dual AGN. The candidate(s) will be full BASS team members and as such may take part and influence the direction of ongoing BASS projects, and pursue new projects that broadly encompass the topics of supermassive black holes, X-ray selected AGN, and galaxy mergers. Preference may be given to those with prior observational experience leading large multiwavelength studies and/or AGN surveys. The successful applicants will also have access to approved large programs with world class telescopes through the BASS team (e.g. ALMA, APEX, IRAM, VLA, VLT/MUSE, VLT/Xshooter).

The position(s) can start immediately, for an initial appointment of two years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional (third) year, contingent upon funding availability and satisfactory annual progress evaluations. The position includes full benefits (medical coverage, 401k matching, etc.). Applicants should hold a PhD in astronomy, physics, or a related discipline by the start date of the appointment.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, CV (with publication list), a brief statement of research interests that includes an outline of future plans related to the BASS survey by June 23, 2023. Full applications as a single pdf should be sent to Trish Dobson (trish@eurekasci.com ). Please also arrange for (at least) two letters of reference to be sent to Eureka scientific (at trish@eurekasci.com ), with the applicant’s name included in the subject line. Questions about the position should be directed to Dr. Mike Koss (mike.koss@eurekasci.com ) with administration questions to Trish Dobson (trish@eurekasci.com ).
