Organization: Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence (BGCP)

Location: Providence, Rhode Island

Title: Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO)

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Starting annual salary range: $95,000 to $120,000

General Description

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence (BGCP) is seeking to fill its senior philanthropy position, critical to furthering the organization’s mission to enable and inspire children and youth, especially those from diverse or difficult circumstances, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, and healthy members of their community, the State of Rhode Island, and the nation.

The Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) position is a rewarding and challenging role for a creative, entrepreneurial, outcome driven, senior development professional, who is inspired to build on BGCP’s current success and move the organization to the next level. BGCP is currently engaged in a successful capital campaign for the renovation of its Wanskuck Clubhouse.

The CPO will have a critical role in raising 7-, 6-, and 5-figure gifts from major donors, corporations, and foundations. The CPO will develop cultivation, solicitation, and closure strategies for annual, major and campaign gifts ($10,000 - $1M+) with a focus on wrapped asks and multi-year commitments.

The CPO will provide strategic and administrative oversight for the BGCP's fundraising programs and oversee the planning and execution of annual and multi-year fundraising and will monitor progress against the organization’s philanthropy goals.

The CPO will be responsible for managing the department which includes a Senior Grants Manager and Associate Director of Philanthropy.

The CPO will support the CEO and the Board to effectively position BGCP to: identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts, endowment funds and grants from individuals, corporations and foundations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of the Investing in the Forever Change Capital Campaign which will result in $10.5 million dollars for the renovation of the Wanskuck Clubhouse; design and execute the annual BGCP mail campaign appeal; secure special event sponsorships and contributions for the organization’s signature events and build an endowment fundraising strategy.
  • Partners with the CEO and the Board to provide leadership and direction to ensure that the fundraising initiatives enable BGCP to fulfill its mission, fund its operations and deliver critical child and youth programs within the community.
  • Cultivates and solicits, in conjunction with the Board and the CEO, major donors and deepens relationships with current donors.
  • Researches and analyzes current donor database and develops recommended cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Proactively identifies new potential supporters of the organization and develops recommended outreach strategies for consideration by the CEO and the Board.
  • Oversees the organization’s annual signature event and other smaller events that occur on a regular basis. Oversees the calendar of special events, prepares the event budget, planning of event logistics, obtaining sponsorships, and solicitation of gifts and preparing printed materials and event publications.
  • Coordinates with Branch Managers as it relates to both organization-wide and Branch-specific fundraising efforts.
  • Provides support, as needed, to BGCP’s Senior Grants Manager or CEO on certain grant applications.
  • Designs and implements the direct mail campaign currently consisting of three annual appeals. Creates direct appeal message strategy and written materials.
  • Encourages and supports Board and CEO in the achievement of the BGCP fundraising goals.
  • Collaborates with BGCP staff team to provide Board philanthropy training.
  • Develops and grows the organization’s program endowments.
  • Builds and expands the philanthropic commitment from the region’s business community.
  • Maintains a strong working partnership with the Finance Department regarding the accounting of donations and establishment of program endowments.

Requirements and Personal Capabilities

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of five to seven years fundraising experience with a not-for-profit agency, educational institution or association. Youth development service experience preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience with fund-raising techniques and best practices.
  • Knowledge of accessing and managing Raisers Edge Donor Database or similar.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, positive and effective working relationships with the Club staff, Board, volunteers, donors, community groups and others.
  • Strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Passion for the mission, the Clubs’ programs and the child and youth population served.
  • Entrepreneurial by nature, enjoys meeting new individuals and corporate leaders, self-starter who enjoys establishing new relationships on behalf of the organization.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Environment and Conditions

  • Background checks: Ability to receive clearances for background checks and other pre-employment requirements, including but not limited to: national, state, and local background checks (including continuous monitoring criminal records watch); RI DCYF C.A.N.T.S. check; education and employment verifications; reference checks; drug screening (for illegal drugs).

In order to perform this job successfully an individual must meet the physical requirements necessary to complete the essential job duties:

  • Professional office environment; limited travel required
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks with varying deadlines
  • Ability to clearly exchange ideas, facts, numbers, and/or technical information, in person, by telephone, fax, email or correspondence
  • Physical requirements include: sight, hearing, sitting for six + hours a day, standing, stooping, the ability to lift three to five pounds; skills essential for successful communications include speaking, writing and reading comprehension.
  • Must have a car and valid driver’s license. Must be able to use own vehicle for business purposes (i.e., picking up supplies, visiting vendors and donors).
