Position Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the Division of Academic Affairs. There are 50 faculty members, 44 SHRA and 37 EHRA staff positions, 260 graduate students, 37 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.
Position Summary
The NC Pure Project (www.ncpure.org ) is currently searching for a Research Chemical Engineer to work as part of a large and dynamic team to develop Ionic Fluorogel resins for PFAS remediation from NC Waters. The successful candidate will contribute to setting up and operate pilot scale reactors (10-30L) to fabricate polymer resins for water purification in collaboration with NC Pure chemists and engineers.
The NC Pure Project is a multi-million-dollar PFAS Remediation Pilot Project funded by the NC Collaboratory and headquartered in Morrisville, NC. The Research Chemical Engineer will be a part of a large and dynamic research team under the direction of Dr. Coronell (Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, UNC Chapel Hill) and Dr. Frank Leibfarth (Associate Professor of Chemistry, UNC Chapel Hill).
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This position does not require previous professional experience, although strong candidates without professional experience will have undergraduate research or internship experience in chemistry or engineering. A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering, or a similar field is preferred. Spring 2023 graduates are encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate will have at least two of the skills listed below, although all interested candidates are encouraged to apply:
· Experience in small-molecule or polymer synthesis
· Experience scaling up reactions to the kilogram-scale & kilo-scale purification
· Experience operating, maintaining, or servicing chemical reactors
· Experience with liquid handling and best practices for hazardous waste management
· High comfort level using tools to build or service sensitive machines and equipment
· Understanding of electrical devices
· Understanding of heating/cooling of large reactors
